Nitrogen

Noticed at the weekend that our local Costco now offers nitrogen filling in the tyre bay. This was mentioned in the tyre clinic at the open day at Colchester OPC last month. Was curious so see if anybody has ever tried this?

More stable as the tyre heats up since it will contain no water disolved in the compressed air normally used to inflate tyres. Standard racing practice, pointless for the road. Nitrogen Oxide (N2O) would be a laugh.
 
If you are proposing some fast road use in southern europe, it is well recommended during the summer. After a couple of hours on the motorway in 35 to 40 deg tempreratures, I was experiencing tye pressures in excess of 55 psi, which can be a bit interesting when you come to some twiddly bits. I changed to nitrogen, and pressures remain constant.
 
I've used nitrogen in the tyres for 3 or 4 years now. The pressures stay far more stable, and there's less leakage over time. It costs me about a £1 a wheel - it's well worth it. Alex, How about using Helium instead to reduce the unsprung weight ? [:D]
 
Air is already 78% nitrogen, the real key is getting out the moisture. Dry air will work just as well in a road car.
