Newbie with a dash and sunroof question + pics

Hi Guys

I have just bought my first 944, a 1986 grey Lux, and I am very please with it, I will post up some pics as soon as I can find my camera lead!

I have only found a couple of little things that need sorting and thought you guys might have the answers.

First one is the display on the dash that lets you know which gear is selected when the lights are on, mine only illuminates the 2 for a few seconds and then goes off, it doesn't show anything after that, any ideas?

Secondly the car has had a new sunroof seal fitted just before I bought it but I drove the car on Saturday after it had been raining and got a drip coming down from the roof, about centre nearest the windscreen, any ideas for that problem?

Many thanks in advance

Mark

The seal is not actually designed to keep ALL the water out. If you remove the sunroof you will see there is a gutter all round the opening and at each corner there is a tiny hole to allow water to drain out of the gutter. I suspect one (or more) of your drains is blocked and the water overflows the gutter and into the car. Pour a small amount of water into each hole and check under the car to see it's draining properly. If one is blocked then gently push some plastic 'lawn strimmer' cable down the hole to unblock it. Be careful as there are rubber tubes connected to the drains inside the A and C pillars and you don't want to push them off. As for the gear indicator - I've never heard of that before. Is yours an auto?

thanks for the advice on the sunroof leak, I will do the test and check it out, and yes I should have said that my car is an auto.

Hi and welcome Mark Paul's note about the sunroof is a good 1st call. If that's not the problem it could be the trim on the sunroof panel itself coming away a little. As for the gear indicator, my 1st guess would look for the switch, which I assume is on the gearbox, but could be completly wrong , I've never had a play withan auto. Good luck, keep us posted (we rarely run out of ideas!) And find that lead

Mark, On an automatic the gear selector switchgear is at the bottom of the gear lever. If you take out the ashtray you can see a couple of the screws holding the outer cover. A likely failure is the very small L shaped spring that transfers the lever movement to the switchgear - it breaks on the bend. It's fiddly to replace but springs are available from your local Porsche centre for a few Pounds. A workshop manual, or the Porsche parts catalogue, will have some diagrams of this. As the fellers above have said Re; blocked drains causing the "leak" don't know anything about the auto's hope you get it sorted BUT...I have to say what an Avatar...That takes me back [:)][:)]

If you search the Porsche websites there are PET Parts Lists for most models and maybe the 944 will be there, can't help more than that as I found them by accident just mooching around on there.

Thanks for all the great advice guys, looks like I will have a busy weekend sorting those bits out, but that's the fun of running an older car[:)] I have found my camera lead now and uploaded some photos of my car, not sure if this is the right place for them (let me know if they should go elsewhere)

Well, copying the image code from Photobucket doesn't work then, what is best way to post photo's on the forum?

Looks very smart - red seats dont usually do anything for me but theres not too much and the overall effect is great.

utopia Your car's colour scheme is truly delicious. As Mike implied in his reposting of your pics (see his first line of that post), for some strange reason on this forum you have to use the protocol:
to close it, not
madeuppic.jpg[img] which is what one might normally expect. Easiest way is to cut and paste what Photobuckt gives you, then just insert the missing a and e into the word "image" front and rear of the url.

Mark, Part of your problem with the automatic gearbox display may be because you have a non-standard gear change - from your photograph you have a ball at the top of your gearchange with a push button on the top. The standatd automatic gearchage is a T shaped handle with the button nearest the driver for operation by the drivers thumb. The assembly at the bottom of the gear lever may have been altered to fit your top assembly. The diagram in the Porsche parts catalogue - PET - may allow you to compare your set up with the standard set up. Mike White 2.7 automatic

Good spot of the lever, I'd forgotten its an auto. The way I post pic from Photobucket is it to copy the bottom one of the links Photobucket gives you, then click on the image button above the message box on here and paste the link. You can post lots of pics straight after, there is only the one
for those 4 above.

I thought the gear selecter looked after market, I will have to get it out and do a little investigating and see whats going on underneath. Forgive my stupid question, where would I get a 'PET' from (what does it stand for?) is a parts catalouge for the 944? Any recomendations for parts suppliers would be great.

Correct! You can take a look here - http://www.porsche.com/uk/accessoriesandservice/porscheservice/originalparts/originalpartscatalogue/
