Newbie couple of techy questions 944

Bought a 944. How big is thye petrol tank. Just cost £95 to fill her up. What mileage should I expect to see out of that.

Where is the fuel mileage reset switch.

Hi Michael and welcome;

The tank is, I believe, 75 Litres
Mileage depends on the model, (is it a Turbo?) how you use your right foot and the sort of journeys you do, I can get well better than 32mpg on a run in my S2, but I don't use it as a daily driver so don't get too worried about it. Others will be along soon with more info on that.

If you can't see the odometer reset switch, then I guess you have a post 1985.5 model with the oval dash? If so, it's cunningly hidden in the middle of the section of air vents nearest left of the instruments. DO NOT press it while the car is moving, this can break the instrument.

For short journeys with some hooning I would struggle to get around 280 miles to a tankful

However, some careful cruising sees me at up to 435 miles on a tankful

I average around 27mpg in my Turbo

The odometer is a fabled 'Do not press button'! (whilst moving anyway, which is a real pain if you forget whilst in the garage and have to wait until the next junction to reset it!)
 
I read the tank is 21 gallons on the later cars and 18 on earlier, the fuel warnign comes on with 2 gallons left.

My S2 is poor on fuel, last tank was 21 mpg, this one doesnt seem much better so have ordered an O2 sensor as I dont thinkits ever been changed and it shoudl do more than 21 mpg, also get a fuel smell sometimes when its running but not when its off, my Saab smelt when it was off and that was a leaky fuel filter.
 
You should be getting much better than that in an S2 Jacko, unless you are wearing lead boots!

forgot to mention that your mpg should improve in summer when you have your lights on less often!
 
It's a 1986 LUX 2.5. Will this be 21 gallons then? So assuming I drive sensibly I should get 38mpg that would give 700 - 800 miles per tank.

Yes, 21 mpg is crap, I suspect that the Lambda sensor has never been changed so £30 for one is probably a wise move. Nothing is binding, I dont think anything is leaking, it runs well and pulls like a train. If it were leaking enough fuel to drop the economy like that it would stink of petrol so to my limited knowledge it sounds like a dodgy o2 sensor.

Not sure what it is like as a job to do, cant imagine it is horrendous.

I dont drive it hard all the time, the previous owner said that is what he got, I dotn see a receipt for an O2 sensor so it could be original.
 
If the car has an oval dash it will have the larger (plastic) tank, if it has the square dash it will have the smaller steel tank. An '86 can be either!

Edit - I've just looked at the pic and you appear to have rhd wipers, so you will have the oval dash and thus the larger tank. Early or square dash cars can only have "lhd" wipers.
 
No 944 has a 21 imperial gallon fuel tank.

All the late cars have an 80 litre tank, which is 17.6 imperial gallons. That is near enough 21 US gallons.

Over the last two years I have got an average of between 28 and 29 mpg (imperial) out of my modified Turbo (approx 300 bhp) and find it difficult to beat it down below 24 mpg even on Sunday morning runs out on the wild and woolly North Yorkshire moors. So if yours is doing 21 mpg, it might be because you are doing lots of short runs from a cold start, or urban stop-start mileage. But on any sort of touring use it ought to be a lot better than that.
 
I think it would be closer to 450 - 500.

Assuming about 30 mpg and 16 useable gallons.

I must say I've never checked mine on either '44, its not why I got them [;)]

Hmm, sounds similar to mine. I think I should invest in a new O2 sensor just to make sure I'm not wasting any of the fun go-go juice unnecessarily

I'd been thinking the same thing after a friend of mine just replaced his 10 year old sensor in a VW VR6. Mine is 23 years old and I'd wondered if it must be a bit dodgy by now [:D]

There will probably be a national shortage of O2 sensors next week - Parts suppliers must love us forum warriors :ROFLMAO:
 
Oh and my 1989 owners manual clearly states the fuel tank is approx 80 litres including an 8 litre reserve

That translates to approx 17.5 gallons in old money. I recently did 512 miles before having to fill up after a weekend trip along our fine motorway network
 
Everyhting 944 is tainted by the Americans. From 'US gallons' to fitment lists adopted worldwide which only address US models.

I was VERY low last weekend, and had to do a bit of travelling with the light on to get any fuel (probably 20 miles with the light on). I couldn't get more than 70 litres in though. Reassuring if there's another couple of gallons in there.

Rears are 17' cup 1's front 17' cup 2's, genuine porsche wheels have offset stamped at valve, both from later 968 and 911's and popular upgrade for these cars, but usually as a whole set of one or t'other!

That's exactly right. Assuming everything is working properly with the float and contacts in the tank, then the light comes on when you have 8 litres left. I think it was Fen who said he once did 50 miles with the light on, I know I have done 30 miles with it burning a hole in my retina before I got to the next Services along a Motorway [:eek:]
