hi everyone newbie here
off to purchase my 1st porsche tom (monday)
944 turbo 1886/7
brought it off fleebay while everyone was watching englad play on friday
is there any pointers to quickly check before purch guy seems gen told me the fuel gauge is "dicky "
the sensor has been replaced but still plays up ?

coming from a honda nsx (ultra reliavble ) i dont know where to start
 
1886.. Wow that's an old car...:).... Seriously though can you post a link so that we can view the car and it's describtion, will help us to help you.

Paul, welcome to the forum. I think you can only read through masses of old posts and hope to get an idea of what to look for, a 944 is a fantastic car but the prices are very far from the real values, or the money that's needed to fix a bad one.

If you're going to look for anything I'd suggest bodywork would be the min thing. You can replace most mechanicals easily, albeit many jobs can be a grad or more, but a really rusty car is going to be uneconomical to repair. There's a black vent in the door pillar that pops out, you can get your hand inside with a camera or phone and take pics of the inner sills. If there's serious rust, or even worse daylight, you're in to big money (£1000 per side at least for a proper restoration at a VAT-registered bodyshop) to fix properly. Factor in the usual bits such as wings, stone chips at the front etc. and it can easily be a £5K restoration. Get underneath it and check the rear suspension mountings as well.

Evidence of major work done recently is a bonus. Belts are 48K/four years maximum, original head gaskets are now on their last legs, brake calipers need refurbing, brake and fuel lines corrode, clutch is an expensive job, suspension will need atention at that age if not new. Any one of these could be over a grand at a specialist, so the more that the previous owner spent the better!
