Hello all,

Brought my first 944s last week, wanted one for ages but took a while to convince the wife it was a good investment and we would earn more money from buying a classic and looking after it for a few years then we would keeping any money in the bank!

The car is in good condition but does need a little tlc, the last owner hardly drove it which never helps...

The 2 main issues I have noticed so far are as follows...

When idling the car ticks over nicely but sometimes when the engine is under load it begins to hesitate/misfire slightly? I'm thinking as it's been stood for a while the leads, plugs need replacing?

The other issue is a couple of times I have put the key in the ignition and turned it and nothing has happened? No dash lights or anything, the lock does feel sticky/rough, is there anything I can do to fix the lock or do I need to replace it?

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Phil

if it is total deadness, (no crank or ignition on) then I would suspect the switch as you mention.
Another thing to be aware of is the DME relay. This is connected to the ECU so if it goes faulty you won't
be able to start at all. Worth having a spare in the glove box just in case...

Ok thanks, if it is the switch will I need to get a new barrel with new keys or is it a switch behind the barrel lock?

You shouldn't need to replace the barrel and key , unless its that that's broken and not the electrical switch on the back.

As for the misfire, sounds electrical, dizzy and arm plugs and leads should make a large difference.

They seem to be able to run on totally knackered ignition stuff, but there is a limit even so!

Hi and welcome by the way!

We try to have an answer for everything [:)] but we do like pictures of car - its possible someone may know some history on it.

Cheers

Hi Phil

As Mike says welcome to the forum, I'm sure the problem will be found amongst the wealth of knowledge on this forum. one thing I would ask is you mentioned the previous owner rarely used the car and that you've recently taken ownership of it, just a thought but have you put any fresh fuel in it yet? old fuel can give this type of symptom too. Failing that then yes, plugs, leads, dizzy,DME etc etc. As mike states pictures would be good, not only to show off the car but under the bonnet too, it gives us a good idea of how the car has been treated. History... last belt change is important. You say that only sometimes it misfires/runs rough under load, can you say what your doing in the car at the time and is there a common trait?

Well hope it gets sorted soon and again welcome to the forum..:)

Hi,
I had a similar problem not long after getting my 944 and worked out that it was the air flow meter. I refurbished it myself using the info from clarkes garage. See below.
Best wishes

Thanks for all the replies, I will stick some pics on as soon as it stops raining long enough for me to take some!
Ok so with the non starting issue I think it's rain related! I went to start it earlier and nothing happened, checked the battery and the area was damp, think the rear hatch seal has gone, dried the area the best I could in the rain and it started!

Iv put a full tank of petrol in it and have already done more miles than the previous owned did last year but sure a good service will get it running better. I will attemp most work myself but does anyone know of any independent Porsche mechanics in hants, berks area?

it could also be the rear lights that are causing the leak, they're pretty well known for letting water in.

Love how you blaggedthe missus with the " INVESTMENT" line, which is partly correct, but a few knowledgeable brothers on here know it can end up silly with "i need" mods [:)]
Enjoy and you will ! [;)]

Hi,
I used this stuff to stop the water which worked a treat.

The carpet at the top left of the rear screen above the battery felt wet so sure it's the rear hatch seal. The previous owner replaced the sunroof seal recently and that seems ok

How do you apply the eldro dum dum stuff to the rear hatch?

Also can anyone recommend a good place to take the 944s in hants or berks?

Will upload some pics tomorrow hopefully!

Yea well it's partly true, as long as I look after the car it will be worth the same or more in a few years.... Just won't be showing her how much it's costs to keep her in good nick!

I replaced my rear hatch seal recently, you can get one for about £33 from Porsche Shop. Its not an original part but much better made/seal than the one I took off. You don't need to use any sealant with it.

The liquid sealant is for sealing the between the rubber seal and the body., so you would take it off. squirt it into the gap in the seal and press back onto the car. Obviously this only helps if the water is getting in between the body and the seal, not if its getting in between the hatch and seal.

Hi Phil, welcome to the forum. My 944 Turbo is at Jon Mitchells Garage at the moment having some work done. His garage is in Fairmile Road, Christchurch near Bournemouth. He has excellent facilities and i'm sure you will find him most helpful.
