New seats fitted

After about 4 weeks I got my seats fitted from Southbound yesterday, I think they look great. Initially I wanted to loose some weight (30kg from stock seats) and get the car a bit more track focused but still usable every day. Not wanting the big RECARO logo on the top of my seats I looked at the leather options, Recaro do a leather trimmed Pole Position seat but I found it a bit naff compared to others I'd seen, poorly fitted, finished and still pretty expensive.

I then found through Southbound that Porsche fitted very similar leather seats to the 964rs and 993rs model 911's, but with three tone coloured cushions, almost identical to the cloth seats found in the 968CS but obviously in leather. Southbound told me they could make seats in the same style using Pole Positions and re-trimming in black Porsche OEM leather. So I thought if I'm going to fit leather seats I might as well get them as close to factory as possible, the embossed Porsche crest being my own addition (993rs leather seats never had Porsche crest embossed, only embroidered in cloth versions).

Original electric motor Recaro seats are 24kg each (right), re-trimmed poles with all fittings are 9-10kg each.

Fitted in the S2, although modern seats underneath I think they still look retrospective to the period.

Very happy with the work Southbound have done, they are proper Porsche enthusiasts too working now exclusively on Porsche cars.

how are they mounted? On runners?

Mounted on Recaro runners with Southbounds own custom made Porsche fit side mounts, this is so the seat sits as low as possible as the Recaro mounts make the seat sit too high (apparently).

Interesting - I need to mount some sparco EVO seats in mine, and as it is likely to be driven by a number of people, I thought it would be better on runners. Recaro runners + southbound sidemounts can't have been cheap though

Seats look great and price for runners and mounts is not unreasonable. I found that in my race car the only way I can get the seat low enough is with side mount bolted straight through the floor, runners just added extra height I really didn't want. Pretty extreme as well as I have big washers on the underside of the car to back up the bolts.

Ed, supberb what was the damage for the leather ? i was quoted over 1k for perforated leather covers ALA Porsche original.

hmm - £275 is a lot...

I was wondering if I could fit some side mounts onto the standard runners

maybe using these ally side mounts on ebay

sorry to go O/T a bit...

Mounts were £56.50 pair +vat, runners £58 each + vat. Two pairs required for two seats.

You can Ed. The only proviso is that the chosen seats arent too wide (no 'Super GT' width fittings!). Remove the runners from the OEM seats, mark tap and drill the sidemounts to suit - Sparco are particularly suitable.

Now comes the tricky bit: fit the runner and side mount combo and measure the space inbetween, then measure the width of the chosen seat. You now need to get 4x aluminium bobin shaped spacers cut to equally space out each side which can then be mounted using suitable length bolts.

Very nice by the way Edd. I still rue the day that I missed a set of black and grey leather RS seats on eBay. £220 they went for and I honestly dont know why I set that limit, because Id have had them for a few pounds more...

@ frenchy

Southbound have fixed prices for jobs they often carry out so wont mind me saying they were £595+vat to trim each seat and £20 for the embossing. If you already have the Recaro Poles and fittings it works out pretty good, if you don't things can start to get pretty expensive.

To be honest I have heard alot about Southbound recently, people saying how very, very expensive they are and how you need a new mortgage, etc. Saddens me a little, as the guys there really are doing something pretty special, the only Porsche dedicated re-trimmers and able to reproduce interiors long abandoned by OEM and Porsche themselves. Leather re-trim work is never cheap and doing it to Porsche/German standards even less so, they don't skimp on quality and so it shows.

Did you know they can re-trim our gear knobs in Porsche leather for £83 (handcrafted and available in the 8 Porsche colours our cars interiors came in), that's £100 less than the item from Porsche themselves, got to be better than the £20 ebay items? They also managed to source some of the last Recaro poles for me at 2011 prices (Recaro have put them up 30%+ for 2012[]) saving me £100 on each seat. They also have the studio cloth from the silver rose (in 2 different colours!), Porsche script cloth in five different colours, ultra rare 924 CGT pinstripe cloth, and many more. So please dont dismiss them when you next need something as you may find that just like your local OPC they're actually pretty good sometimes!

Very, very nice Edd [8D]

Can't tell if they suit your car from the photos, but I'm pretty sure they would look good in mine if you get bored with them!

Wonder if Southbound could perhaps trim the centre console lid to match?

Regards

Graham

I strongly agree with what Edd says, but unfortunately few Frontrunners are worth the (good value for money) expense.

I'm sure they could, they could trim the whole dash I suspect, although not something I would do. Next on the list would be rear seat delete and tidying up the rear carpet area.
