New owner saying Hi!

So I've been a member on this forum for around 5 years iirc, and finally on Friday (the 13th), I bought my first 944!!

Now I know these kind of threads are worthless without pics, and I love to take a pic, but it is bloody miserable here!!

So all I've got is this compromised, rainy pic from my driveway!!

She also has script handles - which is nice!

I bought the car from Norm (Mr.FixitNorm), a really nice guy, very enthusiastic about his cars and loved a chat!!

I've considered buying a 944 for many years but couldn't add yet another car to out household until recently. I didn't have enough money left in the kitty for a Turbo, so above all, all I wanted was a nice straight example - not too worried about out & out performance. I always used to say I fancied the S model as I liked an underdog - so it's quite fitting that's what I settled on!!

The car feels like a good one to me, although I'm no specific 944 expert, but I've seen enough cars now to pick the good from the bad. As there is with any new car (even more so one that's getting on a bit!) there are a few bits that I'd like to sort out, but nothing is pressing.

First job I did was to replace the cone filter with the standard airbox as I had read that these engines get quite hot. The car also has a Promax chip, I'd say it helps the S a bit as it doesn't seem too bad in the midrange as is usually said of the S. Even if it doesn't have bags of torque down low, it will still pull cleanly enough from 2000rpm, just not as hard as it does further up in the rev range. Funnily enough Promax suggest that a cone filter would improve perfomance, but I'd like to think Porsche did their homework with the OE airbox!

I'm probably being a little anal as the paintwork looks good in the sunlight, but looking closely it shows some oxidisation, so I'll be setting aside a day to give her a good machine polish - shame about the weather!!

Only other bits to sort is a slight water leak from somewhere (rear passenger carpet was damp after a drive home & nights rainfaill), a slight rattle from the gearstick at a certain rpm and some vibration when pulling away at around 1500-2000rpm. For the latter I'm wondering if it could be engine mounts, although it doesn't vibrate much at all at idle.

I think I'll probably look into refreshing the suspension as well, new dampers and bushes, maybe a slight drop. It holds the road well and rides nicely, but does feel a little floaty, and not quite as agile as I imagined it might. I think I'm going to swap the 17's for some D90's as well, the Boxster wheels look good and are in great condition, but I'm a sucker for D90's!!

I won't waffle any further, but no doubt will have lots of questions in the near future!

Thanks again Norm :)

Oh and before I sign off, here's pic of our other baby!

Shame the weather has turned for the worse now!!

nice one andy! really glad your happy with her,,looks lovely,,really like those handles,,hens teeth i believe,,jason p

Thanks chaps :)

I've been through a few cars in the last few years, but the 944 is a keeper!!

The drive home was a funny one, dark, peeing down with rain - what happens? Drivers side wiper linkage fails!!

My breakdown cover had expired and my phone was almost flat!! Limping home slowly it was then!

I'm not superstitious, but....it was friday 13th!

Well done. A 5 year wait, you must have been super excited on Friday. I know what you mean about d90s, got them on my s2, love them, but I love tele dials as well, have you considered, or discounted them?

It wasn't so much a 5 year wait, more so other projects getting in the way!! Recently I decided I wouldn't buy one, but after selling my mk1 eunos I thought - why not and the hunt began!!

In fact, five years ago it was the deal on the Eunos that meant I didn't buy a 944!!

I'm a fan of the teledials, but would prefer the 16" version but I have late offset, so d90's it will be. I love cup 2's but they're a bit pricey and I think I'd still prefer 16's. I think the fatter sidewalls suit the 944 better.

16" Teledials do seem to exist in the late offset (Chris (AKA Porker on TIPEC) has them on his car), but they must be rarer than the early offset versions IMO.

However, as strange the Boxster wheels may look (I had them on my S2 :)), they do have a number of benefits, including them being on a par for weight with the much fabled Silver Rose/Turbo S ClubSport 16" wheels in addition to offering a wide array on tyre choice. Suspension condition though does become more critical I shall admit :).

I don't mind the look of the Boxster wheels, I just think they suit the Turbo/S2 front end better than the original. I think the Turbo/S2 front end has more of a 90's look to it, which is better keeping with the Boxster wheels.

But yes, I did notice that the spokes seemed quite thin, so interesting to hear that they're quite light! It's not a priority to change them, but something to consider.

After double checking everything is OK with cam chain & tensioner, etc - my next priority is to tighten the handling a little. It turns in nicely and holds the road OK, but there is a touch of vagueness, probably associated with age. The suspension feels a little soft over high speed/flowing bumps, yet is quite firm over rough roads and low speed bumps (I'm guessing on the 17's highlighting this). Also feels a little like the rear is lower than the front, but I need to get onto some level ground to be sure.

I like the Boxster wheels they suit it well IMHO.

Rainex is the answer to iffy wiper linkages, never need to switch 'em on except for the MOT.

Funny you should say that, I plan to buy some RainX. Is it as good as they say?

I'm another fan of RainX especially for motorway driving, if the rain is heavy enough you will never need the wipers. I only switch them on around town or in light rain.

Hi Andy,

Glad you're pleased with her, with the work you've got planned she's obviously found the right home. I just wish I'd had more time and money to spend on her, especially the time to drive her more. I was gutted when you said the wiper packed up on the way home [8|] - four and a half years of ownership and the wipers never failed once ! .........Friday the 13th mmmmmmm

You sound like you understand the handling better than I ever did, mind you she was my first ( and possibly last ) sports car so to me she always felt ok.

I also know this forum is excellent, with an enormous amount of knowledge, camaraderie & help offered when needed. Despite not owning a 944 I'll still 'pop in' from time to time to see what's going on. I just wish I'd been able to get to some of the meets.

It was the right time for me to pass her on, but there was still a tinge of sadness as you drove her away.

All the best,

Norm

Hi Norm! The car is great as it is, but I always find things that I'd like to refresh, especially with an older car. She drives great as she is, but I imagine replacing some of the (what I assume to be) original suspension components will firm her up a little. But then I am used to more modern sports cars, this the oldest car I've ever owned.

But don't feel like I'm disappointed, I'm very happy! Yours was head and shoulders above the red 2.7 I looked st, which on paper was very good!!

I can understand you being sad to see her go, especially with me struggling to find reverse, lol!!

I'm sure you could come back to the fold one day Norm! I'll keep in touch!

Thanks Andy,

I guess as I'm old as well [:D] she suited me! I know what you mean though, I think changing and tweaking things is one of those things most of us do when we buy a new car, it seems to feel more like you really own it. I hope you get to the bottom of the water leak, I'm coming to the conclusion there isn't a 944 out there that hasn't had a water leak ( cue choruses of mine hasn't [:D])

Having not had leaks in that rear passenger footwell for at least 6 months ( even right up to the Thursday night ) I was convinced I'd cured it - mind you there has to be a limited number of places it could be coming in, hopefully you'll have more luck than me ! I'm sure there'll be lots of helpful suggestions.

I know I'm a daft sod but whenever I sell a car, even the older ones I feel much happier to know the new owners pleased with the deal. I must admit this is the first car I've sold where I've really wanted it to go to a good home.

Norm

Rest assured Norm, I've had many a gaze out of a bedroom window at her, or a peep around the corner when I go out the front door of my house!! I'm smitten!

Sadly I've put my back out today and I've been itching to go out and have a drive, but I'm sofa bound!!
