I guess everyone on this forum has been here before, but I'm experiencing the pleasure/pain of trying to decide on whether to buy a Cayman and if so the exact details.
I'm not a real performance freak and on a (relatively) tight budget, so the standard Cayman is within my reach. It will actually replace my wife's 18 month old SLK as I always register the cars in her name as I am out of the country a lot.
It may be heresy to some to say so, but she thinks it looks wonderful and is indistinguishable from a 911 (but from her point of view nicer to drive) and so do most of my non-enthusiast friends who have seen pictures of it.
The bit we don't like are the circular driving lights in the air intakes , but on the US Cayman Club website there are some shots of cars that have had these sprayed black, and they look much better. Has anyone done/seen this for real?
Anyway, I know colour is subjective, and Porsche seem to change colours & shades around for no obvious reason, but has anyone actually seen Meteor Grey? The "special colour" Slate Grey in my local showroom looks superb, but I don't fancy spending an extra grand for a small colour difference.
The stereo in the SLK is pathetic, didn't seem that great in the Cayman, but nor did the £400 upgrade. Has anyone had an alternative to the Porsche systems installed?
The sat nav in the SLK is also a waste of space, cant find half the places I want to go and keeps telling me I'm off road when on a dual carriageway. Its also difficult to program (and I work with professional GPS equipment). Is the £2000 PCM option really worth while "" I've been using a £300 Tom-Tom with my Harley and it works fine and is always transferable?
Any views on the tiptronic? We have been used to autos, but I did find the manual very smooth and enjoyed it. I'm not sure how popular tiptronic will be on re-sale, I guess Boxster owners will have some experience of this.
Sport seats and 3 spoke wheel "" worthwhile or just more toys? Rear wiper "" is it really necessary "" there isn't one on the SLK and it's a real bind at times due o the shallow slope of the window?
Also have the problem of waiting for delivery and then selling or P/exing the SLK. Got offered many thousands less by my dealer than if I bought a new Merc or sold privately, so the thought of having my new car delivered then having to haggle a trade in price does not inspire me with much hope for a sensible deal.
So, if you are still awake, the new car may have:
Meteor metallic, half grey leather, manual, park assist, 18" S wheels.
Any comments appreciated while I agonise further"¦"¦"¦"¦"¦"¦"¦"¦"¦
