New battery for '89 Turbo

Hi,

I've not been on the forum for a long time since taking the car off the road a couple of years ago for financial reasons. Anyway, things are looking up, so first thing to get it back on the road is a new battery.

Previously, I had a type 075 in the car, but looking at Halfords website it says my car should have a type 096. Now the 096 specs say it's wider and taller. Looking at the battery tray in the rear wing, it has a second hole for a wider battery - so far so good. But there is a lip on the tray that would get in the way of a larger battery. So, should I stick with an 075 or should I flatten the lip and install the larger 096 or will this be too tall anyway? What do you guys use?

Whichever type I end up with, do you know if the Bosch S5 (HSB) range has the vent hole for the breather tube on our cars? Can't seem to find any info on this.

Many thanks

Lee

Can't help you with the battery I'm afraid, but I would suggest buying the battery from somewhere (anywhere!) else. Halfords are quite pricey when it comes to batteries.

I will be getting mine from eurocarparts. They have 15% off all batteries at the moment too.

Lee,
I have a 1989 2.7 automatic which has a type 96 battery which fits - it's quite tight to get it in but it fits correctly.
Whilst the battery is a Halford's one I have VATA batteries on other cars which have lasted for 8 years or more.

Mine needed one, got the Bosch one from Halfords, luckily my dad has a trade card and it knoced twenty odd quid off, was about £90 I think, spins it over very well, they do a cheaper one but not sure how good they are. Mine had one in that fit but was too big and it covered the clamp hole thing, could feel the battery jumping up and down over bumps so go the new one and made a new bracket to fit it in, been ok since, always felt like it wouldnt fire before.

Thanks Guys.

You're right. Eurocarparts is cheaper, but will ask a few mates if anyone's got a Halfords trade card also. Thanks for the tip.

Nice to hear someone has an 096 which fits. I might go that route after all since bigger is better, right? Will check out the 065 too as I didn't know it was another model that would fit.

Any tips on which batteries have the vent hole and which definately dont?

Thanks

Lee

I've got a halfords trade card - last time I checked the price wasn't as good as euro with the 15% discount. It's worth checking though[:)]

Lee,
Try a Google search on a Varta battery - An 096 battery was shown at £71 delivered including VAT. Have recently replaced a Varta battery in a Fiat Merea which lasted over 11 years - replacement Varta was received within 48 hours of order.
