Hi Mat, and welcome. Well done for approaching it the right way, belts are an essential starting point if you don't have proof they were recently changed. From you're location I can guess which Mike it was and he's a star for helping you out. The 944 community here will be happy to answer the many other questions you will have! Other possible points to check for leaks are the windscreen, sunroof, rear window seals and boot area, but at least you've fixed the most likely area on an early 944. Pictures, please. [:)]

Just got myself a 1984 944 in guards red the week before last. (My first Porsche)
Not much history with it so the first thing i did was to book it in and get the Timing belt/Balance belt & Auxiliary belt changed along with the pulleys & Tensioners.
The garage found a few oil dribbles so new seals were fitted aswell.
New Air filter and got them to change the transmission oil at the same time.

Had loads of water in the passenger footwell so vaxed it all out.
The next time it rained it was soaking again so was a bit pee'd off.
Decided to take the carpets out to investigate.
All the underlay was knackered and i managed to rip the carpet whilst trying to get it out. Managed it in the end but in the process found the 2 front mounts for the drivers seat were dangerously cracked.
Got my brother to weld a new plate on.Then my dad came round and decided he could do a better job and took over!.

Came across this site whilst googling the footwell problem and had a good read through many posts. And promptly joined
Found a member very local to me and gave him a call. (A9XXC)
I really wanted reassuring that i hadn't bought a dog.
A9XXC popped over later that day and had a good look at it for me.
Thankfully he reassured me that it wasn't a dog.

A9XXC popped round n saturday with presents!
A new gear shift plate (which has made an absolute fantastic change to way she drives) And a set of HT leads as the ones the previous owner had put on a few months ago were not correct.

So today we finished of the welding
cleared the battery compartment sanded it down painted with kurust. filled the crack with fiberglass and undersealed the whole area.
Poured water in and the foot well stayed dry.
The front seats are now refitted and centre console all connected back together.
The stereo that was in there was hacked together with wires all over the place so has been removed for now until we get time to sort out the mess of wires.

Car is carpetless for the time being until i can be sure the new ones will stay dry.
(Just need to get some new underlay first)

Took her for a 60 mile drive this evening just as it started raining! foot well seems to be dry still.

Still more to do but i knew there would be a few months of work on her.

A big thanks to A9XXC for all his for his time & knowledge over the last few days

I know I always get too carried away and forget to take time out to document progress I have blagged monday off work so will take some tomorrow.

Hi Guys Car looks very solid if needing some basicly cosmetic attention. Hopefully will go for a drive tomorrow and I'll take the camera! Maybe the video too. Cheers

Good news Even after all the rain we had yesterday the passenger footwell is nice & dry But there is about 1/2 cup of water in the drivers side now. Will have to wait until the weekend and have a go at the otherside with the resin & underseal. Found a place in Leicester that can do a new set of underlay cut to size for about £40/50 Some photos of the removed carpets

Hi Mat! Welcome to the forum. It's nice to see another square-dash join us, especially as you're not that far away! As you've already found out, the people on this forum are a very friendly and helpful bunch. I'm glad you've been able to start to work through the annoying little niggles that you always seem to find on a new car. I've had my square dash for just over a month now and I've had to deal with a few leaks myself. The battery tray had a hole drilled in it for an aftermarket alarm, but it wasn't sealed very well so it was letting a lot of water in! I've recently found out that the boot is leaking quite a bit too. I'm hoping that a new boot seal and replacing the rear wiper (a previous owner removed it to save weight [8|]) will properly seal the rear end.

Popped over and had a quick spin in it tonight, a little noisey but as there were no carpets fully acceptable! Then stopped and took a few pics - [link=http://s787.photobucket.com/albums/yy158/A9XXC/944s%201983%20and%2089/]Mat's red 2.5[/link]

Nice Photos Mike Will put up a few of mine later. Good little run out despite the rain we had. Sorry about the late breaking by the old Airmans Rest. Ive never seen anyone turn into there before. But it proved the brakes are in good order!

It ran quite nicely and should be a good project. Late braking? I drive a white van! Cars turned some heads whilst we were taking the pics!

Ok here is what i have done since i posted last. Picked up a set of cookies for her with the proper offset.& a Space saver spare. Just need to get the tyres swapped over from my Teledials. Then i can sell them along with the spacers a previous owner put on. Ordered a new pair of drive shafts complete so they shoudl be able to go on next weekend all being well. Fitted a new Air box as mine had a damaged bracket & a few broken screw holes on it. Swapped the glove box door for a better one and fixed the centre armrest lid. Found out where the water was coming into the car (Again) The heater cover on the bulkhead has been "Modified" by a previous owner and is allowing water to run inside the car. Looking at anew cover on Ebay at the minute but unsure as how to seal it to the bulkhead (Can you get replacement gasket seals for them) Or do i have to fashion something myself? Jobs still to do (That i know of so far) Sort out the electrics (Everything works but there have been so many wires added in the past that it is a real mess) Luckily my Brother is an Electronics Wizz and has said he will do it one weekend when we fit a stereo in. New/Replacement carpets all round (May get this fitted by a pro or someone more competent than me) Replacement seats (Want an original set ideally) Mine has a pair of leather electric seats from a 968 i think which are very nice but are also very heavy so they have to go. Then its just sorting out the body work. Not too much The rear panel has a small hole in it and a bit of rust coming round the lights. The drivers side front wheel arch is showing a few signs of bubbling so that needs sorting sooner rather than later. The main problem i have is that this is my daily car so any jobs have to be timed so she is ready on Mondays for the week. With no Bank Holidays left this year i am not sure how long this will all take. But she WILL get there and hopefully it will be an enjoyable process with the right mix of pleasure and pain along the way!

At least you can do a rolling resto Don't forget to try Elliot for any bits you need - he's got lots, loads of seats to chose from at the moment too and he's not a million miles away, A47 then country roads to him is a nice blast for a 944

Already been to see Elliot and got few bits off him including the wheels. Reserved as set of Porsche embossed seat set & carpets to collect next month. Will probably end up spending more with other bits at the same time, I think i spent a good 2 hours there last time.(Good for him bad for my wallet!)

Changed the wheels for a set of Cookies yesterday Selling my Teledials & Spacers on here now. Picked up 2 Driveshafts & CV Joints (Refurb OEM) Set of bearings for the rears Need to source a set of bushes for the rear ARB. Funny thing happened today. Pulling off from a set of lights Chanfed from 1st to 2nd and the engine kind of stalled. No power at all from the loud pedal. Dipped the clutch and released it and it fired up again. Then a few miles later. Pulled off in 1st Just before i dipped the cluth ready to change gear It spluterred and nearly stalled When i dipped the clutch the power returned. Has anybody got any idea what is going on. Fuel? Eletrical? Act of God! Any help would be appreciated especially as i am going to spend a fair bit on her in the next few weeks (not including what i have spent this week on her alone) Thanks SLOS
