My new S2

So I picked mine up last week but have only just had the time to get some pictures taken. I'm very pleased!

Wow that looks very tidy - I like Baltic blue, good colour for a 944 me thinks [8D]

Does it need any work or is it fully sorted?

Thanks. It is remarkably tidy for a 23yr old car! It has been well looked after, the history file is extensive.

A couple of small problems, the handbrake is ineffective. I've had the rear wheels off and located the adjuster inside the disk but this is seized. Would some WD40 sprayed in a left for a week help?

Also there is some scraping on the offside front when turning hard the left. I'm going to get it up on some axle stands later and investigate.

It's had the belts/chain/tensioners etc changed only 20000miles ago but this is nearly 4yrs ago now. Am I right in thinking to get this done soonish?

 
The belts are about to time out, but Id spend money checking the cam sprockets first and worry about the cam & balance belt afterwards.

I wouldn't spray WD40 inside as it will wet the drum and make the brakes even less effective, best bet is to remove the disc/drum and release the mechanism once you can see it. Be careful when removing the calipers as the washers that go between the mounting point and the car are a pain to get back in so check the layout before you remove the bolts completely to get the configuration correct.

I've had the front up on axle stands today to find out what was causing the rubbing in the arch under load. There is a small amount of play if you grip the wheel vertically but not horizontally. I've tried to feel where the play coming from from (track rod ends/top mount/bottom mount etc) but not had any luck. Any other suggestions?

tell me about it ......I have just replace the rear handbrake shoes on mine and they are a nightmare to adjust correctly , even worst is if you are like me parking the car on a incline .

defo the 944's weakest link ( hand brake ).

Hand brakes don't need 2 be a nightmare.

I set mine 2 the door sill hight. About 3/4 clicks from floor. Do strip down one side at a time. Line the brake disc up with the hole in the hub so u can get 2 the adjuster with the disc and brake on. Work out how much u can wind the adjuseter till and still fit the disc over. Then wind the adjuster with the hand brake down, till you can't turn the wheel by hand, then back it off a few clicks.

Do the other side. The retain springs that pin the shoes to the hub need the hooks facing downwards, there a small groove that hook in to find a Phillips screwdriver works well 2 depresses the springs.

Then I jack the car up by the gear box, and pull the hand brake one click and check each wheel feels the same reistance and adjust from there.

Did you remove the disc? If so make a mental note off the adjuster, so u got an idea off how many treads are showing. Back the adjuseter right off, and prize it out. Split it in 2 part. Should just pull apart. If it needs cleaning/ freeing a soak off oil should work, or a clean with wire brush. Put a tiny amount off cooper grease inside and put it back

M030 brakes with the washers can be a huge pain the 1st time you do them after a while u get them 1st go. A bit off copper grease between washer and caliper helps the washer stay a bit more, put the bolt so far in just 2 hang the washer on.
 
Had a couple of go's at my handbrake and they are bloody awkward............................still not right !

it would not be so hard if one parks the car on level ground...but because my drive is fairly steep i need the handbrake to really "bite".
when i say its a nightmare i was referring to taking the seat out so you can adjust the hand brake handle adjuster and then finding that none of yr spanners fit the adjusting nut because of the metal bracket getting in the way !!....compare to bmw its a nightmare ( lock the handbrake spring down with screw driver , take a wheel nut of both side flick the adjuster as per 944 , then release the locking handbrake spring and yr good to go , 15 minutes max ).

mine will work now, but its the effort required that annoys me ....slightly better now with new shoes fitted though .
