MPG gauge operation

Odd one this - the gauge works fine unless either the driver or passenger door is opened, in which case the gauge deflects right over to the right.
I'm assuming a earthing/short, but pretty unlikely to be the same issue on both doors?

I've some odd faults happen from time to time. e.g A/C not working, wipers not parking, drivers door window inoperative. These are due to the car having been sitting for a while in my opinion. They happen when I'm driving along. The easy fix is a small tweek of the ignition key.... just a touch. The real cure is to replace the cluster barrel behind the key. There's about 8 contacts on the barrel hence the variety of intermittent problems. Not difficult to investigate .....

Had a further thought on this - as it happens every time either door is opened, not intermittently. Maybe a short, earthing issue with the interior courtesy light circuit, as it doesn't work?

Hmmm.....

Spent several hours removing the interior light (it fell to pieces when I removed it....) and driver door card to have a look at the wiring. From what I can tell, each door shut switch grounds the interior light circuit when the door is open, with the resistance of the festoon lamp forming a viable circuit.
I'm only getting 5v at the light terminals which suggest either a corroded terminal or a squished cable somewhere.

The electric wing mirrors adjuster is an oddity, the roller ball switch does the exact opposite to the arrow markings on it eg push it sideways and the mirrors go up or down.

Put it all back together, including refitting the door membrane with gaffer tape. Tried the window but it stopped in the down position - strip down again and found I'd wrongly routed the wiring to the drive motor, so as the window went down, it pull one of the spade connectors off.........

The only positive being that I'm now able to remove and refit the door card in under 5 minutes.
