MOT today (+ new Dansk exhaust)

... and she passed! [:D]

Woohoo! Spreading the love and positivity ... a great day for my 944 ownership :)

We had to fit a whole new exhaust system before hand though, so I opted to look for a nice new stainless steel one and found that Dansk do them and for releatively decent prices too (I believe even new 911 exhausts are Dansk? Unless my mate is wrong!)
I didn't have a great amount of time to search around for the best prices, but type911shop.co.uk were significantly cheaper than porscheshop.co.uk and other places I found in my rush so ordered these -

£323 excluding VAT and postage

An unexpected result was .... OH MY ... does it sound great!!! When you get up to around 3k RPM there's a sexy loud throaty rasp ... that isn't too loud as to be 'annoying racer boy' but enough to be noticable and put a sh** eating grin on my face [:D] Can't wait to jump in her again and take her out for a spirited run!

Be warned though, there was a lot of messing to get it to fit. Had to put a new bracket at the back, and it fits too losely over around the down pipe which took some messing to get a tight seal.
But anyway, I'm a very happy boy today! And with changing the gearbox linkage (intermediate shift lever) too that's made a nice bit of difference to gear changes.

A few advisorys though -

Brake hoses will need to be replaced at some point in the future - shouldn't be too hard to source and replace I would have thought

Both steering arm ball joints and both track rod end ball joints have slight play - now .... my mechanic reckoned the MOT inspector was being over zealous and picky, saying there should be some very minor play there and room anyway.... what do you guys think?

And lastly rear discs will need replacing soon and we sourced the oil leak - it's the oil filter housing to the engine block (seals - gasket) - I'd like to get that sorted soon, so maybe I'll post a separate topic about that as I'm not sure what parts I'd need to order.

Cheers!

Al

Gladyou got your MOT no bother, I was looking at a Dansk for mine when I replace it which may not be too far off. How long did it take to fit?

Thanks Andy. I would say just over an hour - it was mostly because the front end of the centre box pipe fits too losely over around the down pipe, my mechanic sorted that by filling it with something forming a tight and solid seal in the gap - I can find out what it was for you if you'd like.

Toying with the idea of getting one for mine at some point as it's going to be my weekend toy/track car and my mid section has seen better days.

My current exhaust isn't what I'd call quiet (standard items though) but I'd love to hear what your Dansk setup sounds like.

I fitted a rear Dansk section recently and made car much quieter !Mind , old one was 20yrs old.If you like a nice roar you will be disappointed.Did a trackday at Croft and noise test guy said why can't they all be as quiet as this one.

Nick [:D]

Nice price if you don't have an S or S2 as their price for the center section is £530 add £184 for the back box and this makes it rather expensive. Not sure why the S2 center section should be over double the cost of an 8 valve version.

That's interesting, the current one still had what looks like the original exhaust (you should have seen the state of it!! [:D]) as did my previous 944 and despite holes and rust etc were actually quite quiet. I will say way the Dansk is relatively quiet until you give it some gas and up to 3k revs - at which point I find it very satisfying! But I have to be honest and say I've not driven and been around many other 944's to compare really - so I'm going on the last 2 and a couple of friends 944s.

Hi Andy - sorry for the late reply. I've only just had chance to quiz him again, and was slightly incorrect in what I put previously.

There was quite a few mm's difference, which is quite significant in these cases of course. Compound was of course used to to seal very small gap after but naturally wouldn't take all that gap - he used an exhaust expander tool (they're literally called that on the box!) and it took a bit of work and force he notes.

And I'm still loving the Dansk sound, but it won't be to everyone's tastes. I don't like a constant roar terrorizing my neighbourhood, only when I give it some gas ... which like I said is above the 3k RPM mark and most 'nice' driving you won't really need to hit that around residential areas/town. So its pretty quiet up to that point anyway, and you really need to have a window open to hear that lovely throaty subtle roar clearly. Big thumbs up from me still.

Those wanting more beef and roar out their exhaust, I did find a few custom places that can build them bespoke for 944's and tune it to your liking for you -

(dunno if they're any good or not, just found them on Google but didn't have time - needed to get mine sorted ASAP for the MOT)

I can heartily recommend MIJ performance in Walsall. They did me downpipes back and de-cat for just shy of £350 all in. Three choices of noise from quiet to mid sport to full on antisocial! I went for mid sport. New stainless system looks and sounds superb. Well worth doing. With 161k and being a 1991 the old unit was slightly knackered and over welded!
