M3 to 993 ??

Currently own and enjoy a '99 BMW (e36) M3, but still have Porsche in my blood (have owned a '79 SC and an '88 930). So, I joined your forum in the hopes of finding out about ownership experiences with the 993 - a dream car of mine since they came out. Would greatly appreciate any perspective on this fine car, including key things to look for, operating costs and unusual wear items, perspective on to 'S' or not to 'S' (C4S or CS or C2), and unique handling characteristics relative to the earlier Porsche suspension technology I am familiar with. Would also love to hear from anyone who has considerable driving experience with the e36 M3 and 993.

I'm actually on my way today to see a '96 C2 with 150,000km (94,000mi) on the clock which is selling in Canada for $48,000 (my '99 M3 is worth about $40,000 with 120,000km). My view is high mileage is OK if meticulously maintained?? Thanks for the views so far.

M3 is a gorgeous car - real executive blaster. The 993 is just something different - a real sportscar which you can use everyday.

Go and try - you will not be disappointed!

Where abouts in Canada?

Did the test drive ... not impressed with the way this guy has kept his car - sometimes the small stuff is quite telling. Plus, it pulls one way or the other depending on whether I accelerated or deccelerated - suspect alignment - no big deal, but why would someone let it get this bad? Going to keep looking ....

Just been "playing" in a new M3 (18 months old) Wow... My '95 993 C4 convertible is better though, more fun (bigger grin) I can do without the hands free phone, the sat nav, the TV etc, etc. I have a racing car!

Also been driving a Ferrarri 355 around Silverstone today. Very impressive in race trim, just need to book a track day for the 993 now, so no comment yet

It's so hard to find a good 993 without breaking the bank relative to the market for my M3, that I am now also considering putting in forced induction (Dinan supercharger). That would get me about 350hp at the crank for $10,000cdn. My main problem is that once you've had a Porsche, it's hard to ever think of anything else. I will be interested to hear of your Silverstone experience in comparison to the Ferrari??

OK, I had the 993 C4 cab for 3 days now... stupid big grin, hello mr police man here's my license... I don't have a bike because I can't behave, now I have a 911...

Apart from a porsche is not a ferrari and the fact that I own a porsche and don't think I can afford to run a ferrari. There is not alot in it. the 355 I drove came with an instructor and roll cage etc etc and we did 150mph under bridge at silverstone ish (braking points come up quickly, lots to think about) But MY 993 is very usable as a daily car. MY car is actualy MY wifes, she uses it for the school run and then takes it to work (she's now looking for an office abit further from home). I only get it at the weekends.

It is very fast, 100mph wihtout trying, turn in is wonderful, balanced, predictable. The 355 gets out of shape if you lift mid corner, my C4 puts up with it, squirms abit, but stays balanced. the 355 realy did feel like it was going to swap ends.

I think you can man handle the 993, the 355 was very sensitive (may have been track trim/setup)

Oh and there are two seats in the back of the porsche for the kids

Thanks harborp .... still struggling to find good value in a used 993 .... for example, in the last month only one new listing has come onto the market in a city of close to 2 million people .... the dealers are way over the top for these cars given the tight supply side on the market .... patience, I know ..... Vancouver is the most wonderful city I have ever had the privelige of visiting (especially with Whistler on your doorstep!)

Anyhow, how about checking out US cars, there are loads for sale, could even try looking on the rennlist.com

Not a bad idea .... I have heard that getting cars into Canada can be a major PITA, but it might be worth finding out more .... I'll look at the rennlist.
