M.O.T. Failure front lower suspension arm ball joint dust cover

Well 944 turbo went in for mot today but did not make it. Few small advisories but failed on dust cover for ball joint.

Is this a big job to fix? I seem to remember reading you can fit a golf part. Or is that only the pre 85.5 models? Any tips as to where i can source a cover and advice on fitting very welcome.

Have you phoned your local Porsche dealer yet? They're often a surprisingly cost-effective source for parts.
 
If it's just the cover then you can buy a golf mk1/2 ball joint and use the cover on it.If not then your into new or remade lower control arms.
 
My '91 S2 (55k miles) turned up a bad ball joint one one side and split boot on the other. I decided to use the "track" version ball joint repair kits (come with new boots) rather than paying C$1200 for a pair of new control arms.

What I found upon dis assembly was the side with the bad ball joint looked good from the outside but the boot was split right around the top where the wire clamp goes and couldn't really be seen. The ball joint was full of water and really corroded. The other side with the bad boot was in pretty good shape (the split was recent) but the ball was corroded already and it wouldn't have lasted a lot longer.

So - you can't really tell what you've got until you take them apart. I personally am quite disappointed in the ball joints as fitted from the factory. All the friction components are plastic (and not even fiber-reinforced) and sealed so the grease cannot be refreshed. I'm surprised they last as long as they do - which is not nearly long enough.

On the plus side - they are easy to change - especially if you just need boots. Remember to pack some grease into the boot before you put them on.
 
Thanks, to replace dust cover, do i need to take anti roll bar off and drop the whole wishbone? Would I need alignment doing after as well?
 
If the boot is just split, clean it up with brake cleaner, easystart or similar degreaser, then stick it back together with super glue - works every time for MOT. However, if its ageing and perished you'll need to renew.

Craig,

You'll need to undo the pinch bolt at the bottom of the suspension upright, where it clamps onto the balljoint, and lever it apart. You can then pull the old cover off and put a new one on. But do put lots of grease in there while you do it to keep the ball joint going as long as possible.

I have a spare cover in my basement with the relevant clips to hold it in place. PM me your address and give a fiver to Tear Fund (http://www.tearfund.org/en/get_involved/give/) and I'll pop it in the post to you.
