Low resonant hum in cabin?

Hi Guys,

Searched and can't see anyone else discussing similar...

When sat in the drivers seat I can hear a low resonant hum. If I move my head forwards, backwards, side-to-side, up/down it goes, which leads me to believe its something resonating. If I were to guess I would say it originates from the engine area. Its only present when the engine is actually running and sometimes (although I have not narrowed down when) it stops.

Does anyone know what it could be, or how to track it down? Could it be the rear fan?

Thanks in advance
Todd.

Thanks Maurice,

AirCon is off. I can't hear it at all from the engine bay, nor from anywhere outside of the car... just in that 1-2ft square area in the middle of the car. Its not the front fan, its not engine rev dependent, is there whether I'm moving or static.

Thanks
Todd.

Check this
there is a small fan at the rear of heater controls they get noisy. it sucks in air to check temp.

Blank of the vacuum supply in engine bay by heater blower you may find the pipe sucked flat,
often have to renew. controls many things.

Check the charcole caster under N/S/R wheel arch,

Charles

Hi Charles,

Thanks for the reply, I will check that out (the heating system is a little screwy at the moment so perhaps connected). I can hear the fan on the back of the CCU whizzing for 20secs after I turn off the engine (but its not the resonant hum)

Hi,

Thanks for checking back - not yet. I pulled the rear blower fan fuse as that was my prime suspect... but no difference. I haven't had chance to try your suggestions yet but will this week (I'll post back)

Todd.

Hi Chas,

Unfortunately not. I have removed all fuses and it still occurs. All I have noticed is that while stationary the hum is constant (regardless of engine rpm) but while moving it does seem to come and go (quite rhythmically but a little irregularly).

So no real progress, and I am away for a few weeks so will try again when I return.

Thanks for the interest.
Todd.
