loose wing mirror

Is it the top half loose on the mirror base, or the mirror base loose on the door? I have seen the latter a couple of times now, and found what had happened was that the socket head screw used to secure the nitro wasn't in the "drum-like" nit it should be screwed into, but between the mounting bracket and the door-skin. It actually held it pretty well, and when it first came loose I tried tightening it up, until it felt like the thread had stripped. On closer inspection I found the above had occurred. Next time I found a 944 with a loose door-mirror sure enough, it was the same problem.
