Looking for my first 944. Questions

Hello All

I am new to this forum and I have just started my search for a 944. So far I've viewed three -

An early 2.5 (complete shed) trader. £1750.
A 2.7, seemed pretty good, not perfect but some good history, clutch replaced, belts within mileage and age and cills/suspension points repaired. Seller seemed like a nice guy, with a garage full of Porsche stuff. £2250.
A 944 S2 - eBay advert, trader, was supposed to be 'immaculate' but lots of rust on wings and cills (one had a hole in it...) and a knocking noise from under the car.

My first question: Is the performance difference between a 2.7 and a s2 worth the extra in potential bills?
My second question is, the 2.7 car is top of my list at the moment, but am I crazy for thinking that a cheap 2.7 car that I then spend a some money on over time may be a better bet than spending £4-5000 on an S2 that may also still need £££.

I'm hoping to go and view these two over the next week or so.

Any thoughts on the above?

Thanks.

I wouldnt even consider those two s2's , whers a link to the 2.7 it 'might' be a buy ?

I dont know if its still for sale but a guards red 2.7 on p.h for months near me
Looked like a really straight car on at 2250. I'd have given him 2100 if it wasnt guards red
(which unlike most i detest)

5000 or 6000 for an s2 in this market is trying it on unless its very special indeed.
The very rare 2.7's are a good buy in my opinion and i was looking hard for one until i bought my car back.

Short notice (it ends in 45 minutes) but that second one looks like a lovely car - from what you can tell from the advert!

Would rather not post the link on the public forum (might shoot myself in the foot). But we may well be talking about the same car here, judging by your location.

I'm kind of expecting it not to sell. Its quite local to me so would have been looking to contact him after the listing ends - 20 mins until the end at the mo and no bids.

You wont shoot youself in the foot . Some 944 folk know just about every 944 for sale and who the seller bought it off and at what price

Im not the only saddo that does :) linky or no linly if they are a bargain and are down south in particular then 944 regulars will know about them.

If that s2 was a real bargain id have bought it when I was offered it earlier in the year by its prior owner .

Best of luck which ever you choose

Mas

Too short a notice, but eBay is notorious for how to sell a car that won't shift.

Trouble is a trader will say "Fully restored immaculate throughout" for something I wouldn't keep chickens in.

Take your time most of the cars are "known" someone here will be able to point you out a good one.

Thanks.

I will try and answer your questions.

1. Not sure what extra bills you will get with the S2, perhaps replacing the chain and tensioner for piece of mind (as I did when I bought mine). Other than that, it will be about the same IMO. With the S2 you will also get Turbo brakes, front end, and plenty of torque. I prefer the look of the turbo front end cars.

2. Whatever car you buy you are going to spend £££ on, some more than others perhaps, personally I would buy on condition rather than try to get a cheap car to 'do up'. But some find that as part of the fun, it may cost you more in the long term however.

Fair point. This is the 2.7 http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4241237.htm

Also which s2 are you referring to if you don't mind me asking.

I know thats the 2.7 from your description :)

I would have 'definately' viewed it but for the colour. Hes stuck out for his price for ages. If you like guards red and most do then id af least ask him some q and a's re history and possibly view it.

Ive sent u an e mail

Thanks for the reply. Interesting to hear your thoughts about S2 running costs. I guess that makes sense, I've read about the cam chain and guides. As for your second point I'm not really looking for a car to 'do up' whilst for me working on stuff is part of the fun of ownership as far as i'm concerned I'm not out to make work for myself if I can help it. I'd be looking to slowly improve on what I'd got, and make it more enjoyable for what I intend on using it for (weekend fun)

Jon Mitchell Porsche Specialist in Bournemouth is selling one of his own cars a 944 S2, not cheap but it will be right !

black S2 looks pretty good though not a huge fan of the interior. Shame you didnt nab it when it was a private sale as it was at least 1k cheaper.

Some nice Turbos for sale as well at the moment on ph that would be worth considering

I've just seen the thread on this. Looks good for the money considering whats been done on it. I could live with the stone chips so would got for the £4500 option.

Just read on 968uk that there will be what is probably a very good black 968 sport going on the market next week in/near Melton Mowbray, don't know anything more about the car other than :

"Regrettably, next week my Metalic Black Sport will be going up for sale . It will be sold in completely standard spec. It has 112k miles, full service history, full and comprehensive history file inc. all receipts plus old MOTs etc. Had the belts and rollers done by EMC last year as part of a comprehensive service and inspection."

Don't know your budget, but I'd hazard a guess that this is a good one.
