NEWMAN TO TAKE THE DRIVING SEAT AS FIRST NEW PORSCHE 911 IS REVEALED AT MONDELLO, IRELAND
The new model Porsche 911 will make its first appearance in Ireland on the starting line at Mondello, when actor Paul Newman takes the driving seat at a special fundraiser for Barretstown.
The latest generation of Porsche (Type 997) doesn't go on sale in the UK until mid-September, but one car enthusiast will have the opportunity to own one of the very first at a special auction following Newman's race.
The Barretstown Fun Racer event is being held at Mondello Park, Naas, Ireland on Friday, 3rd September to celebrate 10 years of Barretstown, which was founded in 1994 by Newman.
A keen racing driver for many years, Newman first took an interest in auto racing while filming the 1969 motion picture "Winning", in which he played the role of an Indy car driver. His racing car career spans from 1972, and his most recent professional racing victory took place in the Daytona 24 in 1995 when he was 70years old! He has had a long association with Porsche including Le Mans 24 events.
The Barretstown Fun Racer includes on-track speed sessions, Formula SR single seater experience, skid car, karting, autotest, dinner and auction and costs euro €5,000 per driver and guest, with all money raised on the day going to Barretstown.
Barretstown, at Ballymore Eustace, Co Kildare, provides a programme of arts, adventure and fun activities for children with cancer and other serious illnesses. The programme has been backed by leading medical specialists as a valuable part in a child's recovery. Over 1,200 children from Ireland, UK and 19 other European countries visit Barretstown every year.
By facing new challenges in a supportive environment, these children rediscover their self-esteem, improve their self-image and find new skills to help cope with their illness "" all adding up to "˜Serious Fun'.
All children who come to Barretstown do so entirely free of charge, including round trip transportation. Barretstown relies on the generosity of individuals, companies and foundations to fund the €4 million it costs annually to run their programmes. Full information can be obtained at www.barretstown.org
Jenny Winter, Barretstown's Chief Executive, said: "We're thrilled that Barretstown is going to benefit from such an esteemed event in the motoring world. We would like to say a huge thank you to Porsche AG, Porsche Club Ireland and Porsche Club Great Britain and invite motoring enthusiasts to join us for a day of Serious Fun."
