Keys and locks

Hi everyone,

New to PCGB and bought a 993 C2 recently.

My car only comes with one set of key so ordered a new one from Porsche. The new one looks different from the existing one.

As it turns out, the new key works with the passenger's side door and glovebox while the other key works with the ignition and driver's side door.

Do you have any suggestion to make the ignition and driver's side door locks to work with the new key as I suppose that's the original?

Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben

Sounds like some barrels/locks have been changed as the key should work all of them
Maybe a car locksmith can help?

Ben, Porsche will have used the original records to get a new key the same as the one that car was manufactured with. I'd get someone like Timpsons to cut you a spare key by copying the one that works with the ignition/driver's side. I'm not sure I every use my keys in passenger door (and certainly not glove box) and I only use in drivers door in exceptional circumstances, like I've disconnected battery for some reason. So you can probably get away with having different locks. But if you want the car perfect you are probably looking at getting all the lock barrels replaced.

Welcome to the forum & 993s[:)]

You need to get any new key matched to the ignition and at least the driver’s door, as it’s a bit pointless otherwise? Surely the whole idea of having more than one key is so that you have a back up ignition key? [8|] ...especially as 993 has central locking and therefore key for passenger door is daft (that’s presuming your central locking is working, as it should be) [:)]

A locking glovebox is pointless too, on any car. If anyone untoward could get into your car, then glovebox entry would be simple, with or without being locked.

Yes, central locking works. I suppose key for passenger side and glovebox is meaningless. I am just wondering if there is technician or locksmith out there who can adjust / adapt the ignition and driver's side door lock to the key cut from VIN to make it perfect. Lacking that, I think a spare key for the ignition is minimal. The only key I have is also a bit bent... [8|]

As suggested, then, perhaps go to someone like Timpsons (if they will do it, as I know from experience of another car that not all of their outlets have the facility).

Make sure they try new keys(s) so they work in driver’s door and ignition... if your present key if bent (!?), i would get 2?

Presume you have a dashboard immobiliser/transponder as well which you insert before starting car?
These can be had from Hamilton and Palmer, but you will need the serial number for that as well.

Sounds like there’s been a bit of messing around with your car previously - it should be better than that...quizzing the person or dealer who sold you the car might help?
