K&N Air Filters and De-Cats

I am about to get my first 944S2 (hurrah!) and I've been told that fitting a K&N air filter and de-catting the exhaust can enhance the performance tangibly at reasonable cost. Can anyone with experience put in their pen'orth to support this, or otherwise? I don't want to get into chipping and re-mapping at this stage so thought this might be the way to start - if it's worh it.
Many thanks,
Robbies

I can only recount what I've heard over the years of watching what other people do to their S2s. [&:]

I've not heard of anyone disappointed by a combination of de-cat and a proven chip, such as the Promax option.

Hi, I fitted a decat to my S2 which already had a K&N fitted and it definately appeared to free it up a little if you see what I mean, it was definately nippier however the real performance difference was with a chip (promax about £90) this made a massive difference along with the other mods and a Dansk stainless back box, the car is sustantially quicker than standard and much nicer to drive, can definately recommend it [:D]

When you go de-cat do you have to re-fit the cat back in each year for the MOT?

If so does your replacement pipe have brackets simlar to the CAT on it so that its a bolt on/off job rather than needing any welding / bonding?

Cheers

No , just so long as the car is a 91 or earlier car...Thats when the mandatory cats came it...

Hi Robbie,
My S2 has been decatted, Stainless steel box- I think its a Dansk sounds much better. K and N panel filter
and a Promax chip. This was already done by previous owner except filter- it does deliver power very
smoothly and seems a relatively cheap upgrade.
Cheers

Thanks to all of you who have contributed to this so far - all really useful to know.
Re the chip/air-filter upgrade: do you have to declare this to your insurance company??
Once the new chip is in, do you have to re-map the engine (as I did on my 993 previously, and cost about 400 quid...) or is it a simple d.i.y. job - out with the old, in with the new?
Thanks again,
Robbie

Hi Robbie,
I have used Hagerty listed all mod's Cost for 5K miles agreed valuation, garaged, an old fart mind
including roadside assistance U.K. about £160.
cheers
Ron
