Just purchased a 912....

New member
I have just purchased a 1969 LHD 912 from California and i am putting it through for its first MOT in the UK.

At the moment it has no front number plate, red rear indicators, yellow front side lights and i guess that this will mean it wil fail the MOT(?)

Can yu advise the best place to purchase the replacement lens/light - front and rear and the best suggestion for putting a number plate on the front (i don' t want to put it on the bonnet)

Any help you can give me would be most appreciated

You may or may not fail your MOT on the red lenses, it is a bit of a grey area as many testers are not aware of the detail of the legislation, just look at how many stretch limos have the red lenses, and they are private hire vehicles.

The lense units are prob the hardest thing to locate for our cars as original units are no longer made. You can however buy replacement lenses which are a bit fiddly to fit but look ok. Don' t forget to mention you have a long wheel base car.

As far as the front number plate goes, Roger Bray does a bracket which bolts underneath the bump strip. He can also get the lenses, although you may want to shop around to get the best prices.

Cheers and welcome to the glorious world of 912 motoring

Welcome to the 912 Forum, the best bit of the PCGB forum IMO [:)]

Are you a club member yet? If so you should get your deatils and the car' s to Gavin so he can add them to the registry.

Another source of lenses would be Bert at Berlyn Serices. He is a great source of info.

Who did the importation for you? What level of VAT or duty did you have to pay?

Thanks for the welcome Nick - i am looking forward to getting good advice from you all as a Porsche and 912 newbie!

I am a memeber of the club and will have to get the full details to Gavin for the register - i will get him to send me the form.

I will give Bert at Berlyn a call as i got some prices now to compare on the lenses. I take it that you can' t but the whole light fitting as they are not made anymore or just expensive?

The car was imported last year by the guy i bought it from so sorry i don' t know about the VAT or duty

Sounds like the lenses may be the best option.

I have another questions already - i need to get the car serviced and my father (who has a 911 SC) and he uses Peter Tognola in Datchet, 01753 545053 - he seems like he does a good job. But is there anyone else you would recommend out towards my way (Bourne End/Henley, Bucks) that would be worth a call?

I am also running the car on standard unleaded - what is your view on this compared to somethimg like Shell Optima

I have more questions.......[:)]

Hi James

There is a small independent just outside Henley (Stoke Row) who specialise in old Porsches: Hillcrest Specialist Cars. Talk to Simon Hope on 01491 681 003. I have met him several times, but I have never used them to service my car so I can' t vouch for them.

If you' re ever going to be in the Henley area, drop me an email via the forum and we can meet up (I' m currently renovating my 69 911T).

Cheers

Steve

Hi James

Update your profile so that we know where you come from.

If you live west of London you should come along to the 912 meet at the Ace Cafe every 2nd Tuesday of the month

Thank you all for the information and sure that i will be back bugging you all soon with more questions.

The trip up to Ace Cafe once a month sounds great - and i presume the next one is on 12th August! I may not be able to make it at first as i need to get the car MOT' d which may take a few weeks to get the bits and pieces together

Looking forward to meeting you all and checking out your 912' s

Regards

Holly
