Jacking up the front end

Hi All, I need to raise the front of the 944 in order to remove the engine guard plate and sort out my non working cooling fan (different story). I've read clark's guide but would like to take some advice from those of you that do it day in day out, how and where you lift the front of the car. I want to jack the front of the car up enough that I can then place a section of railway sleeper under each wheel and then settle it back down. This is how I have got underneath my old TVRs and Triumphs in the past. Clark's mentions the front supsension cross member, is this a goer and could someone describe exactly where the jack should be placed if so.

You can put a block of wood under the crossmember and jack the car up,but I wouldn't recomend it as the cross member is alloy and you could damage it.I prefer to jack the car either by using a trolly jack or lift under the chassis rails that run from the front of the car along the floor or by placing the jack under the rear mount of the suspension arms.The disadvantage of that is that you can only lift one side at a time.I would never use the jack points on the floor unless you are 100% sure of their condition as you can easily end up with lumps in the floor or even worse hole in the floor.

The way I do it is to use a trolley jack on the centre jacking points and put a stand under the chassis rail, do one side at a time, do not use the forward hoist points you could end up with a big dent in the floor pan.
