...the indicator stalk in my car has gone floppy! It no longer has any resistance between positions and it lolls around like an inebriate.

I dried to move my sun visor and the catch snapped in half too!

Can anyone remind me which Golf uses a similar part, please? I realise that theyre cheap from Porsche, but itll probably even cheaper to buy a VW part off eBay and have it delivered for a fration of the cost of driving across the city.

The whole roof was covered in ice too, along with the inner side of the windscreen...

Probably a Mk1 Golf or Mk 2 as they were around at the time Porsche raised the VW parts bins but IIRC there was a thread a while ago saying a Mk4 fitted and had a metal insert so was stronger so try a search?

The mk4 ones are a perfect fit , i tried them on a while ago .I think you will find it difficult to source them in black.
The factory ones are good and they last a long time , problem is most people expect them to last forever but the reality is that 25 years is more than enough.

The wiper stalk on mine did the same thing a few weeks ago just b4 the MOT . Wipers and washers still worked (just) so it passed . Bought a second hand set of wiper and indicator stalks off ebay and the day they turned up in the post the original wiper stalk fixed itself

I had the same thing with my indicator stalk. Remove the wheel and check the spring clip thing on the switch mine just came loose and I popped it back in no problems since.

With regards to the stalk: it was perfect when the car was last used, so I concluded that it must be temperature related. I was a little concerned that the AFFF extinguishers in the car have frozen too, the according to an infra red thermometer theyre currently one degree above freezing (and probably five degrees away from actually freezing).

Why don't you keep your car in a heated garage during the Winter months? []. It would save a lot of hassle!

Wouldn't there be an antifreeze additive in an Automotive Extinguisher?

Id expect that even without it, that the additives would lower the freezing temperature, but there are warnings against letting them freeze on every one. Ive just carefully read the rear of an extinguisher similar to those in the car and its states: 'supplied without freeze protection'.

2litre AFFF extinguishers should come with frost protection to -4 deg C. Full sized (6/9 litre) can have it as an extra - very expensive as it requires a full recharge and reduces the fire rating.

It appears that mine drop from 8A to 5A with a freeze resistant fill, although their B rating remains 55. This reminds me that I was looking to replace them with 'super' 2l AFFFs which are rated at 13A 70B...
