mate that looks awesome! If my headunit had a rear connection I think I would have been asking if you could make me one for a fee.

Looks tidy. Need 2 redo mine sense iPhone 4 and made mine 4 iPhone 3, there's no way iPhone 5 will fit.

Pretty simple, cut out the the top off ash try, and stick it 2 the packaging off the mp 3 or phone you have.

Now that is what I call super sweet !!, only this week after fitting a double din head unit I have been looking for a place to mount my I-pod 3rd gen touch, ive ended up buying one of those sticky to the touch pad things to mount it vertical on the side of the radio console, but this is a much better design, interested in making another ? i'd defo be interested, cheers, Jinxy

I haven't even bought a 944 yet and really want something like this in there! Do you have any info on how you made it or whether or not you would make another one? Also is that a 7th Gen iPod 160gb...? (Thats what i've just bought)

Cheers guys. I used the tray out of the box from an early gen ipod as its a better fit (mine is 160 gb btw)
As already mentioned it is a case of cutting the top off the ashtray and sticking the two pieces together.
That said though I was not happy with the shape off the ashtray so I re profiled its shape by scraping back the plastic with a craft knife as I wanted the frame to be the same width all the way round.

The BMW net is a great addition for storage, I contemplating fitting another on the drivers side.

Just performed this mod to my own 944, I have to say it looks easier than it is to do, ive got an Ipod touch 3rd gen & it took me ages of searching on eBay to find an empty box with the correct holder still inside, I also wanted to keep the original ashtray so bought a spare one to perform this on, a Dremmel tool makes light work of shaving the ashtrays excess plastic away on the lid, but only use a craft knife on the holder, once you have the correct size it'll slot quite nicely in the original slots on the underside of the lid & some Araldite will hold it in place, the only slight faf with mine was that I used the original Apple USB to Ipod Data lead with the large white connector plug at the base, this is a little tight against the centre console wall when in place, but other than that it look fantastic !!, thanks to 944Scott for the idea & inspiration , cheers, Jinxy

Can you not use a newer style connector? when fitting the tray I tried to keep the tray as far left as I could to give the connector as much room as possible.

Its a much better use of the ash tray and you don't even need a glues to stick the two parts together, I used silicone which worked great.

I have an iPhone, an iPod and an iPod Touch, but Ive only got the insert for the phone, which is the least likely to be used. [:(]

Hi Scott, if they do a connector where the wire enters at the side rather than the bottom I'd be more happy to use that instead, but not seen one, the after market one I also have is worse as its longer due to it having pinch release tabs on the side to pull it away from the ipod, I only used Araldite because I had some in the workshop, but silicone works too, even though it takes longer to set & can be a bit messy on such a small item [:D], cheers, Jinxy

Ebay is your friend [:D]

I had the same problem with an aftermarket one but I find the current style is fine and fits in a treat[&:]

Tip with silicone is to wet your finger and you can push it around and smooth it out [;)]

I will make a greater effort. I think that I do have the iPod box now, having had a good look about, but its the Touch that would be the most useful.

Unfortunately their values are raised by people looking to box up an iPod for sale in order to make it more attractive. Will a 3rd gen Touch fit in an iPhone 3 box?

Bugger! After a careful look Ive found the boxes for both and neither (Touch 3rd or iPod 5th) use a vacuum formed tray. The Touch uses a clear box with a clear flexible insert which cant accomodate a cable and the iPod had a cut out in a hard foam backing!

That said bu99er, by the way and it wasnt a four letter expletive as the asterisks might suggest.
