interior rear hatch opening switches

I have, for my sins, purchased a 1988 928 S4. I have a problem with the interior tailgate opening switches. Passenger side I can hear the relay clicking, but the tailgate doesn't open. The driver's side is totally dead, so I presume the switch is dead. Any ideas please, before I go to the specialist for help?

They are quite temperamental. Mine comes and goes, But rotating the switch does seem to help. Be interested to see how you get on
