Indicator not automatically switching off and very quiet

Hi all,

My 986 has developed an issue where the indicator 'tick' sound is very quiet, plus it does not turn off automatically when the steering wheel straightens out. This means I can have the indicator continuing merrily until I manually switch it off.

Has anyone had the same issue or might know the cause?

The indicator on my 986 was always far too quiet even from new. I think that goes for all of them.

Indicator not turning off is usually faulty indicator stalk mechanism, which is common fault with wear / age. You may be able to fix the existing stalk mechanism otherwise replace it. Replaced ours and upgraded to 4 stalk mechanism to enable cruise control and onboard computer.

The sound normally comes from the flasher relay and swapping these can change the sound level, done this on other cars and they are generally standard pin unit used by most cars so if you have another car you may be able to swop them to see if that gives you the level of sound you want.

Hope this helps

Thank you @marc_tt. Really appreciate the advice. I'll investigate the mechanism next weekend (hopefully). I'll see if I can get another relay and check if that makes a difference.

I tried to do my own fix, but that didn't work so I have a new 4 stalk unit to fit this weekend. Turns out the high-beam switch as faulty as well. Plus I have the joys of replacing the high and low tone horns. Neither work now. Then it will be ready for another MOT.
