Hi guys I'm looking for a CS at the moment as my Boxster is selling this week.

Can you tell me the things to look out for when viewing them?

Any common weak areas I should be ensuring are right with the oily bits?

Also if your selling please get in touch.

Thanks,
Pete.

Hi Pete.
Make sure the car has had its CAMS checked recently. NOT just the belts..

I might harp on about the cams + chain, BUT as 2 of my last 68,s have fallen foul to this problem, you could say im VERY particular about it....[8|][8|][8|] .Trust me , they are a costly item...

If the car in question has around 100K miles as most do, and the cams havnt either been replaced or checked then budget for at least one if not both...££££££££££££
Basically one cam is driven by a timing belt + the other cam by a chain .The chain that drives the second cam ISNT part of Porsche service recomendations, SO if the car has been at a OPC all its life, it wont have been checked....Indies usually know about this "chain" problem ...

The timing + balance belts have a life of around 4 years / 45K ish...They need checking, recent history.

Clutches are prone to going pop at around 100Kmiles. Unless previously changed.

Gearboxes have been known to whine , + can be the pinion bearing, neccesitating a rebuild.££££££...

Brake callipers are prone to "plate lift" , generally corrosion of the alloy calliper.A bodge fix is to file the edges of the pad down to make it fit in the calliper. This only prolongs the eventual expense of refurbing the calliper.

Oil leaks are generaly front engine seals,[balance shaft etc]. fairly easy job, especialy if the belts need changing, as its a job whist your in there,,....

Fuel pipes are also begining to corrode, Now while the pipes arent expensive,[aprox £30 each] the cost of fitting them can be, as the rear axle / beam has to be removed/ dropped down.. Its a time element....£££££

Make sure the suspension is good + not soft , as most are getting tired now.. After all the cars are 15 years old...

Ive been around these cars for a good 6 years + generaly have had most of these challenges done / happen, So its first hand experience.

If you fancy a VERY good 968 cabrio, then this / mine is for sale...ALL of the above HAS been addressed making it a VERY VERY good buy.....If you like value for money....

Yes there are cars out there for less money, BUT i bet most if not all of them will be hiding some problem or other....There usually cheap for a reason....+ in the long run end up costing you LOTS more.....

Im sure that ive missed a few things out, but this will give you a basic idea....

For a FULL run down of potential "challenges" take a look at the Hartech web site. It has LOTS of good usefull info on there....[Downloadable buyers guides]. A bit of bedtime reading....

PS .WHY does the car have to be a Club Sport.????
Dont get hung up on it being a CS...Just because the journo,s in the mid 90,s gave the CS a rave review.
As the Sport or even Coupe is just as good a car, never mind the cabrio....

Happy buying ...[:D][;)][:D][;)]
