Idling speed

My S2 recently has experienced quite high idling speed (between 1600-2000rpm) compares to the usual normal 900rpm. Although it does come down to the 1k mark after driving for a while. Can someone explain why. Air leak? Control valve, MAF sensor? When its at the higher idling speed, the engine feels like coughing/choking if I press the gas pedal.

It is now 3 out 5 times during starting that the problem will occur particularly when the engine is still hot.

Could be any of the above, but most likely to be the idle stabilisation valve.

I think it's screwed to the inlet manifold somewhere - can't remember for sure. You'll need to take it off, clean it out (carb cleaner is a goodie for this), wait for it to dry and then re-attach it.

Not a difficult job. Someone will be along soon to give some piccies and advice of where it can be found.

Oli.

Sounds like ISV which is bolted under the inlet manifold - apparently over time it gets all gummed up and causes the idle to fluctuate.
It happened on mine but i just couldn't get it out so i had to manage by disconnecting the the hose to it and spraying carb cleaner liberally into it.
Did the trick though.

I agree with the others. The ISV gets a build up of varnish over time and carb cleaner will break it down and free things up nicely. It is under the inlet manifold on the S2 and it is possible to get it out though it's tight.. You cna try to take a hose off and spray carb clean into it as a first attempt, but if that doesn't work then it's worth struggling it out to clean it properly.

hi charles heres a pic of the valve for you ..its near the front under the inlet manifold..hope this helps you out..
