Idle control valve 1988 `S'

Hi, does anyone have a picture or diagram to show where the idle control valve is on a 1988 944S? I also need to know how easy it is to remove as I think mine is sticking ( apparently it's possible to clean )

not sure about the S but it's under the inlet manifold on the Turbo if that's any help

It is under the intake manifold on an S2 also so I can only imagine the S is the same. It's the same basic engine so I can't see it being too different. It has to connect to the intake manifold anyway. Look for a pipe from the rubber inlet boot that goes through a cylindrical device about 4 or 5 inches long that has a plug connected to it. The other side will have a pipe that connects to the intake manifold.
 
On the turbo you have to remove the intake manifold but IIRC when I had a look at an S2 it may have been possible to remove it without the intake manifold being removed. Again not 100% about the S but for ease always easier to remove the manifold. Andy Watson may know better as he is an S owner.
 
Thanks Rob, I really hope I can take it off with out removing the manifold ! The reason I need to take it off is I have an irritating problem where I'll pull up at a junction or roundabout etc and it'll stall from idle. It runs fine when on throttle and doesn't always do it, sometimes I can sit at a set of lights, it'll be idling ok then start to fluctuate and stall !

From various things I've read, the ICV can get gummed up and stick randomly, and can be removed and cleaned ( hope I don't need a new one as they seem a tad expensive )

Yes his forum name is andywatson or you could try elliot (that is his forum name) he is a former S owner and he is also a 2nd hand spares dealer. He may even have a good 2nd hand one.
 
norm you can do a quick check to see if it's sticking. Get someone to turn the ignition on while you listen with the bonnet open for a click from the valve, it's a cylinder shape under the manifold and easy to spot. If you do this successfully a number of times I doubt it's sticking but it is still possible. It is also possible to remove the valve on the Turbo but its a pig of a job and you need very nimble and strong fingers to do it, my son can but I can't, guess it's an age thing..:)

Thanks for that Pete, will try it tomorrow when it comes back from the garage ( sticking brake pads on offside rear and no time to sort it [8|] - luckily the indy I use are good and not too dear. )

Hi Norm,

PM sent, can't help with this as I am not sure what the ICV is, I do have a spare manifold in the garage if you can let me know where it is on the manifold I will take a look for you.

Hi,

Had a similar problem to this some time ago with my 87 lux, a healthy dose of carb cleaner in to the inlet manifold cured the problem. Might also be worth checking the throttle return spring as this also seemed to have a random effect on the idle speed.

Right, had a look for the ICV at the weekend, it seems to be just below the inlet manifold between the middle branches. Didn't look like there was any way it can be removed without removing the manifold first. [8|]

Interestingly I `wiggled' the lead connecting to it ( the way you do [:D] ) and since then it hasn't stalled, I'm wondering if the contacts on the plug in connector just need cleaning ? I'll see if I can do this next weekend, although we've got a two day seafront airshow Saturday & Sunday so it may have to wait.

I'm sure I checked Clarkes Garage and it doesn't cover the 16v `S' version

I did have a brown trouser moment[:D] a few months ago when the throttle return spring on the accelerator came off and vanished during a `spirited' moment coming out of a roundabout ! I managed to flick the pedal up to stop it over revving and found a suitable spring at home which has been working fine since. ( The stalling fault had been happening long before the return spring went awol )
