how to replace door glass.?

The rail at the bottom of my cabrio passenger side window had rusted through and I discovered these aren't very easy to find.. I ended up buying a second window in the US and spent more on shipping than the glass itself.! The joys of classic car ownership eh

Has anybody replaced their glass and do you have any tips..? I already had a go at pulling the existing glass out (no success, it seems to me the bottom rail assembly is too thick to pull through the slot at the top of the door..) and I imagine it must be a right faff to get the three little wheels at the ends of the window lifter mechanism arms into the rail..

Any advice gratefully received..!

Not sure if it will help with a cabrio, but the majority of bodywork instructions are in the Porsche 924 workshop manual, it does include a section showing how to correctly remove and install the door glass. My memory I'm sure on the coupe after the mechanism arms have been slid off the track then the window lifts out through the gap at the top of the door. You have to tilt is in order to clear the door frame on the couple (no such problems with a cabrio though?).

Many thanks - I don't have that workshop manual - I think I have to have the window regulator loose inside the door in order to get the arms to line up and insert into the rail on the glass. That is, if I manage to get the old glass out and the new one in.. what a faff!

Yes, you need to have the mechanism loose inside the door. You can use strong adhesive tape to hold the window in the "up" position in a coupe, not sure how you will manage this with the cabrio.

Worth checking the runners inside the door whilst you are in there, you can get new generic felt runners from ebay if you don't want to pay dealer prices. Worth checking with the dealer first though as they might not be too expensive.

Come to think of it do your scraper seals need replacing as well? also, a good time to make sure the drain holes in the bottom of the door are clear of debris.
