I came out of C2 facelift into a TT last year, aside from the extra toy's the main difference is ...GRIP & GRUNT !! The wider track & tyres make the car corner flat at seemingly impossible speeds. The grunt is totally addictive, the car doesn't so much accelerate like a naturally aspirated car, rather it sort of explodes from one point to another (throwing you up the road) 2nd gear is a fair ground ride !!! The car "overall" feels more cohesive than a standard Carrera. I am certainly pleased I made the move, it is a fantastically accomplished car & I am sure you would become addicted to it's performance.
Negatives...
1/ should Porsche really charge that much extra for the Turbo ?
2/ It's too quiet inside (I've just added a sports exhaust, but it's still not as good to listen to as a Carrera with sports exhaust ).
3/ you find yourself going faster than you think you are going.. sorry officer.

P.S. definition of a Turbo....."Savage" (dictionary says..........wild fierce & cruel) that about sums it up !!!

I went for a spin in a 996 Turbo at the weekend and would say that it is more refined than my 993 Turbo but not as pure a driving experience; amazing none-the-less. Take one for a test-drive and find out for yourself ...but be warned, the extra power is addictive!!

Porker residuals are still amongst the best, but a turbo will loose more than a C2 or 4, by virtue of it's higher price & smaller market. The only thing that will help the Turbo's case is the new 997 model, out next September, but the new TT won't be around until 2005 !
The Driving Experience started with taking the two cars, each with an instructor, from Reading to a test track in the MOD area near Bracknell. There we drove around the high-speed circuit plus brake and handling sections.
I drove the C4S first and found it pleasant, surprisingly neutral and reasonably but not especially quick, (I have an 03 Boxster S).
Then we swapped cars and the TT just blew me away. I reached 14mph more before braking on the main straight, won't say the actual speed as the track has an "advisory" limit of 70mph. The speed was helped by being able to accelerate through the long, sweeping bend before the straight.
The bad thing is, you don't have to be a particularly good driver to take a TT very fast round a track, a lot less work than getting my S near the limit. It's all rather effortless.
The TT was also rather good on "elk test" with PSM switched off, even on trailing throttle. I could easily correct the slide, and with PSM on, it pretty well did this for me. Of course, the brakes were superb.
Would really like to try a TT with the power kit!
Good thing is, Ali really loved the TT also, so now looking at ways to justify one, though must try the GT3 first.
Is it worth £20k more? oh yes!
AFN reading have got me the Porsche GB GT3 for the 10th Jan, the yellow one thats in Evo this month. Can't make up my mind between GT3 that would be delivered early 05 or wait for a 997 Turbo.
Your still welcome to have a drive of my C4S with the power kit tomorrow.

2005 (or 2006 at latest) the standard car should offer similar output to the current 996TT with powerkit !!
NICK... liked your write up, go on join the club, you know it makes sense, a nice secondhand 996TT with some of the depreciation already gone !
