Hi forum
I have a new project car 87. 924s
its been stood 4 years and I've been having trouble with the electrics bad connections everywhere, the only things now not working is the boot release and the cooling fan
I've been aware of a burning hot smell and have had my head around the fuse box when I found the culprit to hot to touch and seems live feed even with key out, but what is it ?

I'd hazard a guess that it looks like another dangerously botched item!
If you were the chap who asked about a 'modified' part for the radiator fan previously, I'd seriously consider getting a competent motor electrical professional's advice.

This item looks suspiciously like a method of 'bridging' the fuel pump relay, but with my limited electrical experience I could not offer further suggestion.
Looks like a lash together to me.[&:]

Thanks for your input
but I feel this is original equipment by the way it was mounted and as the car is one owner from new (well two now)
so no this isn't the messed about car from your earliy post , my guess is it's some kind of transformer? But in truth I don't know , with it removed everything that was working still works

Hi

Its the cooling fan (engine coolant) resistor which should be tucked under the dash by the glove boxfuse board. It will have 12v to it all the time for obvious reasons and may explain why the fan isn't working.

Thanks
Russell

Thanks Russell
i also posted this on the technical forum and had the same answer from Bruce
im pleased that it's all part of what seems to be the same problem, although I now know it's supposed to get hot as it dissipates energy but I can hardly believe it's supposed to get this hot ( a fuse dropped out as it deformed in the heat ) but I now have plenty more bedtime reading, another
piece of the puzzle

It's the 1/2 speed fan controller when the ignition is off. The normal fan operation is controlled by a relay on the relay panel

Edit- pull the connector off the radiator temperature switch and bridge the contacts with ignition on, fan should run if relay OK, shows temp switch u/s

Thank very much for the info
I did bridge the thermo switch on the rad and still no joy, so is the next step new relay ? I've held back a bit on just replacing things electrical as I've found I could bring most back to life with cleaning contacts
I look at your list of motors and think heres a man who knows a think or two about the 924 ??
I've just spent 2 years rebuilding a 77
911sc including my first ever engine rebuild to be told it's to loud to smelly and to uncomfortable ( just as it should be ?) so enter the 924s

I would also remove the connector from the fan-bridge with a test lamp instead-then bridge the fan thermostat -switch on ignition & you should get light if relay still OK-just in case the fan motor is either very stiff or faulty

Check the fuses on the auxiliary fuseboard, LHS passenger footwell, either No 3 or 9, numbered from the engine
