Here's one for you.....

Nothing that particularly springs to mind. What would you wish to change about it?

If you look beyond the gearbox itself to the whole transaxle there are a number of final drive options, and a number of different limited slip diff options, which may be worth considering for particular track applications.
 
S2 final drive is top of my list. For the box Id be looking at the best bearings I could find, maybe heat treating third gear (and fourth on Paul Smiths old car) and finally, removing the coiled heat exchanger and fitting a conventional radiator (needs adapters but theyre available).

Its supposed to be good for up to 500bhp IIRC

You could get the (now worn) OEM clutch open LSD rebuilt but if its track work it is considered Guards 50/80 LSD`s are the best as they are not an open diff and change ratios I suppose and uprate or replace the pinion bearings which do give up after high mileage.
 
Just for the record,my 88 turbo S had done 180k miles before it was used in club racing ,and it survived a whole year of racing without a rebuild,I changed the oil quite a few times though,all I am saying is a good quiet gearbox can be a very tough thing out of the box..
My 968 gearbox is good but doesn't feel anywhere near as robust.

Interesting, is that because of the particular feel of the shifter?
I have zero track experience with the 968 gearbox but would be interested to hear more on how you would compare them.
 
It's the cogs,they just don't feel as agricultural and tough on a 968,mine needs syncros on 3-4 doing again,the 944 turbo feels like the cogs are off a tractor....!!If it is a quiet one they are hard to break on a turbo,I feel like a 968 needs to be used more gently???
Just my butt dyno and instinct makes me think this way I have not seen either in bits just used both hard on a circuit and know which one has been in need of rebuilding more..!?
 
Thank you for all your replies guys [:D]. I am thinking along the lines of LSD's and heat treated gears for some Nurburgring miles (lots of!!). I guess i'm just wanting to waste another whole load of cash on my 44 Turbo! [:D]
 
Without doubt get a good LSD but I wouldn't worry about heat treating the gears. The S2 r&p conversion is great in most cases however it does limit top speed and also makes long hwy driving a little annoying as you feel like you need another gear to drop the revs.
 
Oh, here is my friend in his 3L turbo down the main straight of our local track. This with a stock 951 gearbox and S2 r&p conversion. Note the dials. Not a super long straight.
