vac pipe sounds loke the breather from the oil filler spout , if smoke not coolant , have you disturbed the power steering fluid resevoir pipes ? could be running onto exhaust manifold , maybe just oil on manifold following rebuild , will burn off after a few minutes , if not a leak somewhere. Nick [:D]

Had exactly the same when I started mine after a top-end rebuild recently - combination of oil/wd40 on the manifold and surrounding area, and also a small coolant leak from the long pipe that runs parallel to the engine just above the manifold..... enough to drip coolant onto the manifold. If its just oil etc. it will burn off but it's pretty disturbing when it starts smoking ! Mine took about 10 minutes to clear once I'd fixed the coolant leak.

Every time I have rebuilt an engine I have had this; oil from lubricating fasteners, oil spillages from filling things up, oily fingerprints from having handled engine parts - they all get hot and burn off in the first 20 minutes or so. Open a cold beer and enjoy the fruits of your labours while letting it idle. If it is still smoking when the beer is finished, have another one. If it is still smoking when that one is finished then think about worrying ... Oli.

Hi folks just re-fitted my engine after a semi engine rebuild, i have fitted Victor Reinz gaskets.
Luckily it started first time, but after 30 seconds or so smoke started coming from what looked like the manifold at the front near the oil filter, but can't be sure as there's other pipes in the way.
I don't dare keep it running in case its a coolant problem.
Any ideas would be extremely grateful.
Also I can't remember where one of my vacuum pipes goes to, its the one that comes from the front of the throttle valve near the air cleaner hose???
Thanks

Vac pipe - some have just 1 to the FPR + damper some have another to to the vacuum reservoir probably disconnected near the heater valve top rear of engine under inlet manifold, all assuming 8 valve.
