Help - relay problem

Hi,

Could I run this problem past you all please.

I parked up at work today as usual. When I got back to the car at the end of the day my battery was flat. It wouldn't fire up. I could hear a clicking noise coming from the fuse box. I removed a few relays one at a time and noticed that the clicking stopped when I removed the cooling fan relay (part no 944 615 105 01).

I managed to get a jump start and then put the relay back in (causing the fan to run permanently now) and drove home. Ive left the car on the drive minus the relay (as it will presumably keep the fan running all night and the battery will again be flat in the morning.

Will it simply be a case that the relay has failed and I need to source another?

There is one on ebay for £30 which seems a bit steep to me.

Is it possible to fix them?

I had this problem many years ago with my 1st 944, I removed the fuse for the cooling fans to avoid the battery drain until I replaced the fan switch fitted to the radiator. Try pulling the connector to the fan switch as this should be supplying the power to trigger the relay. If it stops the relay clicking it narrows it down to the fan switch.
 
Cheers for the advice. Ive just been out in the dark to have a look for the connector but as far as I can see it must only be accessible by getting underneath the car? Is this right?
 
Its directly below the top water hose on the radiator on the N/S of the car, quite difficult to see but you can get your hand to it if you feel about and it can be got to from above.
 
you will need a deep 32mm socket and universal jointed arms its a real pain to get at. and as above its right under the top hose on the right hand side of the car when looking from the front.


If you pull the connector off and the fans stop its the thermo switch, if they stay on its the relay currently £175.00 from OPC

You can change it in situ or by draining some coolant first.

If you do it in situ, you WILL get wet (how wet depends how quick you are). Don't overtighten the new one as it screws into the plastic end tank and cracking that means a new radiator. If you decide to drain all/some coolant first then you're better off pulling the hose at the bottom right (looking forwards from below) rather than unscrewing the blue drain plug as these have a tendency to snap due to age.

Ordered one today from OPC Newcastle for £18 (part no 951-606-481-00)

Just going to have to keep removing the relay after driving until I get it fixed.

Whereabouts are you in the NorthEast? I can point you to a very very reasonable Porsche Indy 2 mins from OPC Newcastle who know 944s well.
 
yes as others have said its much easier to remove the fuse rather than risk damaging the relay.

I would recommend that you also clean the earthing point 2 (Haynes manual schematic pg197) on the left front chassis rail down near the horns which is the earthing point for the fans and coolant sensor switch amongst other things.
