I have a knocking noise from the osr and I have replaced both inner and outer cv joints only to find the noise is still there.I was convinced that it was a cv joint []
I find no movement in the rear shock or the short stabiliser bars and wonder if anybody can help me please?
The noise is more of a dull doink doink noise if this helps.
thank you

Think that would match a sound I have recently developed!
Was guessing its a bush - shock, top or bottom or the ones you've mentioned.
Let us know what you find!

is the noise all the time when driving ? or only when going over a bumpy surface ?
What happens if you knock it into neutral and coast ? is the noise still there ?

If it were me I'd jack up the nearside rear wishbone put the car into first or reverse and rock the rear drive wheel back and forth vigerously and see if you can identify if the noise is in the transmission somewhere . No noise probably points towards a bush in the suspension/wishbones somewhere.

Another useful tip to identify noises is to drive the car slowly alongside a high brick or stone wall with the window down or the door open. The noise is then reflected back off the wall . Watch out you don't lose your head though![:(]

No noise in neautral or normal driving only on left/right turns.Reversing into a parking space after going forward first has caused the noise occassionally.
Over bumps only occassionally experienced noise.

Mmm I suspect its likely to be a wheel bearing from your description but its difficult to diagnose from a distance

Try taking a long sweeping left hand bend and then a similar sweeping right hand bend.
if the noise is only present on one direction then its definitly a wheel bearing.

Further checks today
1.eliminate rear shock (after replacement)
2.no play in rear antiroll bar
3.short links have no play
The rear driveshafts do have play going into the diff(is this normal I wonder)and is there any adjustment if this isnt a daft question

Have you actually checked your wheel bearings or just assumed they are not the source ?

All you have to do is jack the rear wheels and try and wobble them vigourously. Any discernable movement means your bearings are worn

I suggested to my brother in law many years ago that the rwb on his Polo needed attention - he duly checked it said it was ok and 2 days later the wheel overtook the rest of the car on a down hill run!
He had left the handbrake on when checking.
