Hello and welcome. A square-dash with an S2 engine transplant sounds pretty hilarious. Do post some more pics, 'cause it looks nice on that little one.

Id like to see more of this, however the pedant in me has to tell you that the S2 is 944 S2 doesnt refer to series two. An S2 is a series two 944, but so are all other oval dashboard / 1986 model year / September 1985> built 944s.

Hi everyone, just finished getting my 944 back to completion... took it to the German Car show at Beaulieu at the weekend and was the only 944 there?! Although having said that the show wasn't that great unless you like BMWs, BMWs and more BMWs... but the museum was great although Beaulieu don't' have a single Porsche on the grounds!

My 944 is an 83 square dash with 3.0l series II engine... Pascha interior and original cookies on it... recently had the bodywork done and a general tidy... and loving every minute of it!!

This is my second 944... the first wasn't good enough to rescue through some MOT and clutch hurdles but it donated it's wings and cookies to the new one and this one is a keeper... rust free, awesome sills and tidy interior... and the 3.0 engine is chipped with an induction kit and roars along....

All in all, You can't beat a square dash!!

Hope you all are enjoying the summer....

Regards

Jason

Welcome ! Great looking car and I am with 944 man really want to hear/see more about it - sounds really interesting.

I like the original appearance. I have always been enthusiastic about series one 944s, particularly the first couple of model years, even when everyone else wanted an oval dash car.

Plonking a 3.0 S2 engine into an early square dash sounds interesting. How difficult was the job? I also have a 2.5 square dash and personally I prefer the look (inside and out) of the early model, but I must admit I am a little jealous of the poke that the more powerful later models have to offer. If you have any more info and pics of the job I'd be interested to see them.

pics are small for post... JMG Porsche in Christchurch did the swap... I've had a few wiring snags since but all in all so far so good with the engine itself... chipped and an induction kit it pulls from about 2500rpm till the red line :) love the sound too.... and as it's 100kgs lighter than an S2.. it goes a little faster i do believe ;) this should give you a link to the photos... https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152032745726729.1073741825.726106728&type=1&l=6a4aec7396

Sorry mate I don't like it............. in fact I think you should sell it to me and I'll hide it away up here in scotland.[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

I like it even less than Colin does....you've devalued it so much by changing the engine that it's probably worthless.. I would show you some sympathy and find a home for it in my garage to save you from the shame.... [:D][:D]

[:D] Always had a soft spot for early cars with pascha.... Maybe some fuchs to finish the job?

Looks very, very nice - a real sleeper [8D] Some people call that colour Doom Blue but I have always liked it and yours looks in great condition [:)]

Thank you all for your kind words (Machiavelli attempts :) ... have to say I prefer the cookies over Fuchs on a 944 (What?!).. yes I do! It is a bit of a sleeper... and handles great! So the German Car Show is a non-event in the 944 calendar then? and who has some black and pascha doorcards kicking around? :) 'Thanks for the welcome, appreciate your appreciation so I do!' (old Peter Sellers-Tom Jones quote) jase

Jason You seem to be just the sort of person we love to have on this forum. Car is looking good ( Love pasha). Glad to see you've got a sense of humor as well. Also I would go for fuchs over cookies any day.

This fuchin' is good, this keeps cookie prices down.... Yesterday I put the side trims back on and successfully refitted the rear view mirror.. I'm 6'4" and the mirror basically blocked half the left hand side of the windscreen... so after chatting to an Autoglass tech havin' a fag on his lunchbreak I heated up the inside metal screen clip with a cigarette lighter.. and then twisted it clockwise/anticlockwise gently with mole-grips and it came off!! yahoooooo! so now I can have a rearview mirror again.... to see things disappearing behind me.. :) Historically I was a VW fan, beetles and then later the Type 3 fastbacks which I still have a massive soft spot for... then after my '71 fastback went bang I got an '89 Mk1 Golf Karmann Clipper which I love as a daily driver.... then I got sucked into viewing a bronze '82 944... which was my first dabble into Porsches... had some fun and loved the styling but realised when the clutch went and looking closer at the bodywork that it was shinier than it was sturdy... but everyone has their 'first Porsche' story I expect... then I got the current one and decided to bite the bullet and get it sorted... £2000 on bodywork £2500 on the engine and a new clutch on top of the £1500 I paid for it so I'm in it for £6000 but the finished article is epic and for £6000 with clutch belts and all that other stuff done and dusted then I think I should be able to keep it rolling along on classic car insurance and MOTs etc. for a grand or so a year all in.. (famous last words.. :) It has started idling a bit lumpy-low intermittently since Monday.. but doesn't affect any other RPMs... just when you drop the clutch and the revs fall to 400-500RPM then hunts and waivers around a little.... I've looked for leaky air hoses etc. but no idea so far.... ..and the rest, having owned German cars forever, I'll deal with as and when.... If it's roaring, leave it alone!! :) Jase

Hi Jason Love what you've done with your car - looks great! I'm actually thinking about doing the same thing with my 84 as I've just had a pretty hefty estimate on a refurb and gasket job (circa £2000) and I've always fancied sticking the 3.0 unit in a square dash. Don't suppose you could answer a couple of questions? Did you change the gearbox on yours? I've heard that the 2.5 box can handle the extra grunt and the shorter gear ratios could also improve acceleration (while sacrificing a bit at the top end)? Did you have to modify the air intake? What were the main problems you encountered? Any info you have would be greatly appreciated. Steve (first time Porsche owner)
