Hello back, and welcome. A very large number of the 924 / 944 / 968 family make a bit of a whine from the transaxle, and indeed many of them did it from new. In most cases it is a steady-state thing that does not get worse. Going by your description as "slight whine (very slight)" I would say no problem. Unless you have a record of it being done recently I would change the transmission oil at the next service anyway, as it is likely to be old and nasty, and a good dose of fresh oil can only improve it.

Hi Tom and welcome to the best 944 forum! Whine is usual but I would be very surprised if a 1983 square dash car had an LSD. Its very difficult to tell a LSD from the outside, but jack up both wheels and turn 1 wheel, if the other turns the same way its an LSD if the opposite way its not! Where abouts are you? And we love to see pictures!

Hello all,
I have just bought a 1983 944 that is metalic red in colour.
All seems to be in pretty good shape but there is a slight whine (very slight) coming from the rear end on de-acceleration is this something i should be worrying about? I have an idea it may have an lsd as it it will spin both wheels together. I cannot find the sticker showing the option's list so i dont know if it does have an lsd, will have to jack up the rear end to find out for definate.
Thank you Tom

Welcome, looks great. [
] The only real way to judge how bad the gearbox whine is would be to get a ride in a few other cars. I'd say that anything less than you needing ear-protection whilst driving is no problem. Do change the gearbox oil, it's a very cheap job and can only be a good thing. Just make sure the fill plug comes out before you drain it - one will be soaked in oil and easy to remove, the other one might not and then it's too late. [&:]

Hello and welcome! I've recently purchased a square-dash 944 myself. I will echo some of the comments on here about the exceptional support available through this forum to owners of these fantastic cars. Mine also whines. I accept this as a feature of the car and makes it feel more like a race-car (to me anyway!) I love the colour by the way[
