Hello sparky!

As I suspected, fitting a new Bosch distributor cap and changing the 3 NGK BPR7ES + 1 Autolite Dynamic spark plugs for 4 OEM ones has given me 4 cylinders back. Even the rogue Toyota plug lead on no.1 cylinder seems to be working fine although I am going to change this for a BERU one shortly.
I also changed the air filter which was absolutely filthy and it will be getting an oil change this afternoon.

With the engine now firing on all 4 I can hear a distinct rattle from the centre of the cam cover which I am presuming is from worn cam chain tensioner pads. So that is the next job on the list once I have sourced the bits.

It's definitely looking like my car was only serviced on a "only change it after it has broken" basis for many years but I'm still of the belief that I can bring it back to health again. Once I have it mobile then I'll get it in to a specialist for the belts and rollers to be done.

Oh, and while I was the doing the air filter I noticed that both headlights and one indicator lense are cracked! Plenty of little jobs all adding up!

Cheers,

M3

I had a rattle from the centre of the cam cover. It was because the chain had stretched to the limit of the tensioner... I finally fixed it by replacing the chain.
Seriously recommend you at least inspect under the cover before driving it as it can be a time bomb on these cars. This is the state mine was in just after I bought it:

Can anyone recommend a UK supplier for the cam chain and tensioner pads please? I had a quick look online but most searching brought up US sites. i would rather buy from a UK source who I can build up a relationship with as I am sure my car is going to need A LOT of new parts to bring it back to life again.

Porsche... They should always be your starting point for new parts queries as they are often as cheap (or cheaper) than going off-brand.

Cool, thanks. I spent half an hour in my local OPC on Friday trying to piece together a history for my car. They were really helpful and I expect they will become more so if i start spending some money with them.
Cheers,

I'll make another suggestion. Under your name it says "Guest of the Club" by which I take it you are not yet a PCGB member. Join the club. OPCs will give a discount to club members and even if you're buying a relatively small amount of parts you will rapidly find yourself in profit. Other commercial parts suppliers also give discounts to PCGB members.

Join the club.
...and you can get a very posh Certificate of Authentication which looks great at the front of your history file, also a very useful valuation letter for your insurers (both free services to members).
...and a high-bling magazine to give to your local GP's waiting room.
