Just a short note to say 'Hello' from a new member based in Welwyn.
I owned a nearly new 996 C2 - bought from H.R. Owen in Hatfield back in 2000. It was my main car and although I had a lot of fun with it, I didn't really like the attention it brought. More than once when I left it parked, I came back to find a ding in the side - where someone had opened their door onto it. I sold it just after 9/11 at a huge loss - when the markets were depressed and prices of everything had fallen.
Now 20 years on, and having tried out pretty much all the other German marques, I bought a 2004 C4 in April this year (as a second car this time). Nice and plain in seal grey and in mint condition with plenty of history and loads of recent bills - coming to more than I paid for the car - which was nice. I've had plenty of local outings in it - making use of my lockdown right to take exercise (mental as well as physical is what I shall say if challenged), but I am now yearning to take it on a longer trip somewhere in the UK or Europe.
I used to be a bit of a Sunday biker and had an old BMW R1100 RT, which I took on a couple of European trips to Garmisch Partenkirchen with the BMW Owners Club, travelling through France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. These were both fantastic journeys, with brilliant scenery, windy roads, great hotels and friendly camaraderie. The highlight for me was travelling up the Stelvio Pass, traversing hairpin bends whilst contending with huge Winnebagos coming in the opposite direction on the wrong side of the road - that certainly got the heart pumping.
I would love to do a similar trip in the Porsche and with the wife this time, although next year may be a bit too soon with the current situation. Are there any tentative plans to organise a long-weekend UK trip - Wales or Scotland in 2021, or is this just too optimistic right now? For me, the planning is half the fun so I am keen to have something to look forward to. Is there anyone like-minded and equally frustrated out there?
I look forward to meeting some of you when we are allowed to.
Best wishes for a Happy and safe New Year.
Rod.
