Hello - a new car for the register

Hi,

I have just acquired a speedster. It is silver in colour with red leather interior. It is needing a lot of TLC which I plan to give it over the next 6 months. Having peviously owned an immaculate 944 cab I am still coming to terms with how much work is actually required on my speedster.

Anyway I already have a lot of questions and a list of parts required so I wondered who the best person was to talk to for some advice. The 944 forum was a case of post it one minute and get an answer the next - this forum does not seem that active.

Anyway in true 944 style I will post a load of pictures over the next week or so. Some will make you cry!

For reference my car is number 1940.

Also I have renewed my membership so expect this to appear against my name soon.

Hi Frazer,

I used to run the Register before Geoff and as I recall car 1940 wasn't on it, so you may have found a 'missing car'.

Do tell us more! Is it a can can red interior or burgundy?

Let me know via PM who the last owner was and perhaps it will ring a bell with me.

As far as I am aware can can red with linen piping. The last owner had the car since '94 when it was bought with 1706 miles on it.

The door panels and in red leather also - they need replaced as they are stained beyond repair by water and the gear leaver gaiter is in red too as is the bottom edge of the dash.

The car is untouched however with the original stereo, books and tools etc. Just to let you know what it is like I spent 4 hours getting one wing from a sandpaper feel to a polished glass feel - the paint has been neglected for so long. There is lots to do but the core car is excellent - needing used and cherished however.

I'll get the pics up tomorrow.

Been working on this all weekend. One wheel took me half a day to get "reasonable".

Any source of parts or good advice then please let me know.

You are a brave man buying a car in that condition [:)]. What is the story behind the mould and the rust on such a low mileage car?

It sat outside not used for 10 years - real shame eh!

The engine, brakes, gearbox and oil system have all been either overhauled or replaced recently and I have ordered new carpets and I am currently trying to source new door skins.

With the body being structurally good, I am going to get all of the rust areas properly fixed then get the car re-sprayed well.

The hood was green but after a full day's work is now immaculate, black and watertight - as a speedster roof can be water tight!

So a lot to do but the car is worth it.

You got your work cut out there Frazer!
Bearing in mind its been left outside for 10 years I think it looks remarkably good!!
Would be worth doing a full photographic story of the project. Would make a great article for the club mag!

Suggest you try Southbound for the door cards.
 
Im sure the cars going to look Great when you have finished it..

Cant believe somebody would leave it outside for 10 years unused
what a waste.

As Chris says please keep record of all your restoration nad lets get it in the club mag. Start off with how found and give updates as and when you complete them

Fraser, what is your location?
I had a 993 interior in creme refurbed that was way worse than yours for approx £450.......that way you retain originality.
Work was completed in Warrington by 2 Connelly trained guys.
They completely stripped the leather back to basic colour and then re treated/coloured full interior, even steering wheel, to excellent standard
There was also a post in 911PW this month for a mobile guy that did similer job.
I am about to get my 964 speedster seats done also with same process
Car looks great and I have seen worse rust on cherished garage examples........i am also asuming that it was a "Buy"

Lovely looking car and good see that it is now with someone who will use it and look after it.
Well Done on saving it from the elements.
