Hello 968-ers (new member)

Hi all,

I just picked up my first Porsche last weekend. It's a 1994 968 Sport in Guards Red with 62K on the clock.

Needless to say, I intend driving it a lot more than its previous owners did.

My first impressions are that it's very well put together, and I'm sure it'll be very quick once I get a few more miles under my belt.

The only thing that needs attention (touching wood) is the stereo. I've heard that the Lux Coupe came with different door cards and 17cm speakers, which should be a straight swap. Can anybody post a pic of one?

Also, has anybody fitted an autochanger? Where's the best place for it.

Hope to see you all soon.

Chris

Hi Chris and welcome to the forum. I have a CS and as far as i know the speakers in mine are probably cut down versions, compared to the coupe, plus i have have a lot less speakers too, so i can't really help you there. Apparently the autochangers fit into one of the side wells in the luggage area.

I'm sure that someone here will have the answer for you, good luck and enjoy your new car.

Del.

Welcome on board Chris.

First off, I suggest you join www.968.net and then do some research thro the archives there, as you will find all you need to know and more about speakers. It is a topic which has been discussed at huge length.

From memory though, the CS and Sport came with a simple single speaker in the door card (probably a 4x6 oval) whereas the coupe had a 3 speaker pod in the lower door pocket, and one high mounted tweeter. Both have a fitting in the rear passenger side card for either a 4 x 6 oval or a larger round speaker (forgot the size) if you remove a blanking plate.

Can I make a suggestion before you buy a multichanger. Check out some of the newer MP3 players on the market such as this one http://www.bluespot.co.uk/stock/daytona.asp

I have fitted this and it is simply fab. You can cram up to 18 albums onto one CD rom, which makes a multi changer look pointless. A few other folk have tried this unit on my recommendation, and they all agree it is superb, especially at the price.

Cheers

Thanks for the replies guys.

John, that's a nice looking piece of kit. I was really only looking at Alpine, as I've had a (MP3) head unit of theirs in my previous car, and it was great.

I'll definitely consider this one too though. Did you fit yours yourself? Was it easy? The Alpine needs a dedicated power lead straight from the battery as they say the amp draws too much current for the standard loom.

Re 968.net, I've lurked for a couple of weeks, and it appears to be very US-biased (as you might expect). The problem being that whenever I've seen someone mention a Sport, nobody quite knows for sure what they're on about.
Happy to be proved wrong though.

I've just tried to get there and I'm getting DNS errors now. Is it down?

Chris

Alpine is good stuff, but it looks out of place in a 968 I think, too space age. At least the Blaupunkt stuff is black and silver, and a bit more restrained. The Woodstock DAB set is getting a lot of good press, but the daytona is essentially the same thing minus the digital radio, and a whole lot cheaper.

Fitted it myself, fairly easy, get a Ford Escort loom converter (old DIN to new DIN) from Halfords for £10 and it's all but "plug and play"

Agreed about www.968.net being very USA biased, but still helluva useful. It was one of the reasons I agreed to moderate this list, to get a bit more going in the UK. Don't forget the forum at http://www.porsche968uk.co.uk/ too. This is also a brilliant site to bookmark http://www.clarks-garage.com if you are going to do work on the car.

Welcome Chris,

I too am a new 968 owner (2 or three weeks)also a sport (1994). Thinking about your question re Cd changer I would have also said the luggage compartment holes as there is not much space to store anything anywhere else. Does yours have the storage compartment in the centre console-and what exactly are you supposed to store in it ? Unfortunatley I cant use the glove box for CDs as mine has two immobilisers (one porsche). Has anyone else got one in the glove box..it's impossible to make a quick getaway.

I was also interested to see that John's clock is manual and in the centre console, mine is LCD to the left of the dashboard, when was that changed ?, as my 1987 944 also had an LCD clock which never worked properly.

I can't boast 60,000 though, a great big 146,000 but drives like a dream, I dont intend on selling yet so it's not a problem.....although I rather fancy a new GT3.

All the best

Carol

It is simply a difference between coupe and CS/Sport (obviously a very heavy clock!)

.....although I rather fancy a new GT3.

You and me both!

PS Good to see this 968 forum is picking up a bit of speed ... keep it coming!

Hi Carol,

As John says, I think the clock is one of the Lux / Sport differences.

We get a larger cubby hole, and a digital clock / stopwatch, an they get an analogue clock, and a temp (inside and out) reading where our clock is.

It'd be nice to have an outside temp display.

I've got my battery in the boot in one of the cubby holes. Is this usual for a Sport? The manual shows it under the bonnet near the drivers side wing.

I have an open tray in the centre console. I think I'd rather have the cubby though. Somewhere to leave your phone out of sight while you fill up with Optimax. [;)]

Hi Chris,

The Sport's battery does live at the back - in the left-hand well behind the rear wheels - at least that's where mine is, and my CD-changer is in the other well.

It works fine except that on bumpy roads it does seem to suffer from jitter given that the suspension's just a bit on the firm side!

I've got additional rear speakers in my car, as well as the front two. They were fitted by a Porsche dealer before I bought the car, so I'm afraid I can't help you with any tips there.

Cheers,

Rob

Chris - congrats on a fine choice. Unlike lesser cars, which get boring after a while, 968s just get better - so enjoy! The battery location btw is a LHD/RHD difference and not peculiar to the Sport.

John - I finally registered for this forum and it's good to see another UK 968.netter - and my car's 'twin' again of course!

Regards
