Heat Shielding

Hi,

Before I embark on the replacement of my old HT leads in an attempt to sort out an intermittent misfire when driving in heavy rain / spray, I would be interested to know whether anyone is using any heat shielding products on their HT leads, ignition system, or even their starter motor please. Are these of benefit, or not and which products would people recommend? Here's a link to a few such products, which might suggest this area is more than just snake oil:

Also, is there anything about the standard design that's critical to shielding key electrics and which I should pay attention to (eg. the Cat heat shield)? I'm interested in anything, please, no matter how seemingly obvious - thus far, my regular firms of grease monkeys have drawn a blank on curing my misfire, which only turns up in grotty weather then you really want the car to run smoothly.

Many thanks,

Paul

Misfiring in rain is indeed a classic sign of degraded HT leads. Just replacing them should solve your problem but prepared for the cost because they're about £400 for the set. The leads are very well shielded from the exhaust by the box sections on either side that the undertray fixes to. Those box sections act as heat shields and also for cooling by channeling the air flow pushed into the engine bay by the fan.

Agree , you have degrading leads and or cracked distributors that break down in the wet or a cracked sparkplug .

I replacing my HT leads with a stand set ( not cheap ) but they are good leads and it solved a few issues and then I replaced the working coils and that made a difference as well, as they had obviously degraded over time as well .

Try unplugging the ignition packs by the coil ( only one at a time "when the engines off" ) and run the car and it should show up a breakdown and which side it is.

Thanks, David.

I assume the Ebay link was to the current cheapest seller for the BERU lead set (part no. ZE751), but it didn't work when I clicked on it, so here you go (together with a link to the TYPE911 website that appears to have them at the same price):
