One of my mates has offered me a greddy profec A. Boost controller. I am looking at getting a dual port wastegate. Do any of you guys know if this will work with it?

Mine is a B but works very well.

It is something of a fiddle to get working nicely in the first instance and I am sure I could get mine to work better, or indeed bother to set the Lo setting as well.

Once working , with a good DPW it gives good high boost control assuming your Turbo is big enough to deliver.

It may however cause issues with the cycling valve if you haven't already removed it.
 
Notwithstanding John's success with a similar piece of kit: Id suggest extreme caution before altering the boost. Can you fuel it? Whats your injectors duty cycle? What knock detection do you have (and how does your ECU cope with it)? Can you monitor your AFR?

A simple Dawes will see over 300bhp: but for how long?

EBC is definitely the way to go. Mechanical boost control devices, though simple and reliable are dumb and will not allow you to hold consistent boost through the rev range. The Greddy seems to be a good piece of kit and is well used in the 944 Turbo community (though it tends to be the B model as John has said). It does require some effort to set up, but so do all EBC's as far as I can tell.

As Paul has eluded to, you can't simply bolt on a DPW and EBC without looking at your fuelling (i.e. ECU chips) even if you are maintianing stock boost pressure. I can recommend the Promax chips, but there are others out there (MaxHP and Vitesse for starters). If you're looking to increase boost pressure you'll also need a 3 bar FPR - you'll need to match your boost pressure and fuel pressure to your ECU mapping. Also if you are running higher boost levels you should really install larger injectors. I haven't but would'nt increase boost pressure anymore than my current 1 bar (stock is circa 0.75 bar) without increasing injector size.

I have an Apexi EBC ready to install but it is waiting until I install larger injectors.
 
Sorry, I didnt add that I am getting promax chips and already have a bosch 3 bar fpr. I thought that standard injectors were ok up to about 1.2 bar? My car is a 250bhp so think stock boost is 0.85.

I have ProMax chips, DPW/MBC, 3BarFPR, K&N filter, VDO guage, Cometic Gasket, and run 17psi or 1.2 Bar. No problems in 35000 miles.
They told me not to go over 1.2

I believe Tony (944Turbo) has the Profec A

I also have the Spec B and it is a good device wth a few more features but a little harder to setup than the Spec A
 
I thought mine was a B spec, but will check, mine is certainly easier to set up, will check later as just off to work

An EBC is certainly something you don't do by its self. You might also want to look at (minimum) a narrow band AFR meter.

1.2 is generally considered OK, based on your spec (assuming the chip is correct and you run 98 ron), but Tony had experience of his car going lean on a track day (at that sort of spec) and had to back the boost off as a result.

Despite what some might say, tuning 944 Turbos is far from Plug'n'play.
 
Fitting a 'KnockLink' would be well advised too; even if you fit a wideband lambda and gauge. Id suggest disassembling the KnockLink (or DetAlarm) and building the coloured LEDs into the binnacle.

What sort of air fule gauges are you gi=uys using. I had a splitfire on in my old 924 turbo and it was s***.
Are there any kinds that can use our existing lambda sensor?

I just got an innovate wideband kit. Not tested it yet will let you know the results, hopefully be using it to tune a TR4 this weekend.
 
OK, my opinion on stock injectors is that you are probably OK going to 1.2 bar on stock injectors with an MBC but not an EBC. My logic here is that an MBC bleeds boost at the higher RPM (by as much as 0.5bar) therefore the fuelling requirements at the high RPM's tails off - just as the injector duty starts to get pretty high. However with an EBC you will hold boost much higher up the rev range and may even maintain max boost to the red line. In this scenario your injectors will be close to hitting 100% duty cycle i.e. you have no contingency. That, for me, is a little too close for comfort. All of the aftermarket tuners i've spoken to thus far have all advised to install larger injectors for boost pressures over 1 bar. Go-on, there is obviously people out there getting away with it, but for me I like a bit of contingency because at 6krpm at WOT if something goes amiss things happen very quickly. My EBC can monitor injector duty and run it to a user-defined limit, so I could say I want a max boost pressure of 1.2 bar but limit injector duty to say 85% and the EBC will manage all that for me. I must get round to installing it!!

Aftermarket chips tend to be overcautious with regards to fuelling and will run quite rich to stave off detonation issues, so that married to the the fact the ignition timing is not boost pressure sensitive (so is another level of caution) and the ECU's knock protection, these cars seem to be pretty imune to knock issues with off-the-shelf kits without any additional knock protection/monitors - though again things like this will help give you that extra comfort that everything is tickity boo.
 
thanks for the help. I think I will probably just run the car at about 15 psi so just a shade over 1 bar. I will ready about the profec but I dont think it motiors duty cycle
 
The good thing about the Promax chips is that if you change injectors then the chips have maps to accommodate, though if you up boost pressure later on then you will need new chips. I guess the thing you've got to be sure about is, are you going to want to increase boost pressure at some stage in the future? If so then you're better off going for the 1.2 bar chips and programming your EBC to reduce boost at higher rpm's to be safe. Then when you upgrade injectors you can switch Maps and reset the ebc.

Going lean was a result of the vacuum/boost pipe coming off the FPR so glad I was monitoring AFR or I would have missed it.

 
My boost controller is a B-spec type1 similar to the S-type, have you got a link to the A-spec?


 
I was using a autometer with the standard lambda it was fine for monitoring not enough range for tuning. Have an innovate waiting to join it.
