Well it's all over for me. I was just going to put some air in the tyres this morning when I heard little pop from the engine followed by some smoke and then people running out of a café shouting that the car was on fire. After the fire brigade had done their business (quickly and efficiently too, for which I'm grateful) the engine bay looked pretty bad, and beyond repair realistically. So it's been scrapped and I'm pretty gutted.

You know what they say ' its only a car' fortunately you werent on the motorway when it went up.
Your insurance should cover another 944 if you want one and if not something else ?

Thankfully no one was hurt. Bad news for sure but maybe it's not the end if the road for the car? I'm sure that much worse has been repaired.

So, have you sold the car as scrap? It looks like an otherwise nice car. I would have been chucking it on eBay, unless you received a good deal already?

Did you not have an agreed value with your insurers?
 
I did have an agreed value on the car but taking into account the excess, the increase in premium, the cost for scrap and the fact that I can get my money back from the insurance (I'm still in the 14 day cooling off period) meant that financially there was little difference and I saved myself the of hassle of the claims process.

It has already gone for scrap, it happened on a red route in London so I didn't have a lot of time to make the decision. I can't say that I don't have any feelings of regret but I'm not sure what I would have done differently. The parking space outside looks a bit empty . . .

 
Glad no one was hurt and very sorry for you and I hope you got a reasonable sum for it.
If the shell is sound it would make a straightforward project with a rusted donor.
Hope you can replace it in the near future.
 
I wish I could say I did get a reasonable sum for it but I didn't have the heart to haggle, it was a bit like haggling over a dead pet.

I don't know how sound the car was overall; the guy at GCR Central (in Leicester) thought that it had been in an accident, the nearside rear wing was rotten and the passenger door was badly dented, not to mention any other niggles. That's not to say I didn't enjoy my ownership though!!

Any ideas what caused the fire? Would be useful to know so we can all check in case it's something that might be common to all our cars.
 
No-one could say for certain.

The guy who came to collect said he'd seen a few porsches recently that had had fires caused by electrical issues, but he also thought it had a carb so I would take that with a pinch of salt. I had trickle-charged the battery the night before and it was still warm about ten minutes after the fire had been put out which seemed a bit odd to me.

The lead fireman said that it looked like it had started pretty centrally in the engine bay, near the throttle body but he couldn't be any more specific than that; certainly the hose to the throttle body was a mess. When I got out to have a look there was a liquid burning on the road underneath which I suspected might have been fuel but in retrospect it was burning with a very yellow flame.

I had recently removed the fuel rail to replace the gasket below the cam box about six weeks ago and suspected something had gone wrong there despite checking everything when it went back; but that area of the engine wasn't too bad and the fire may well have been much worse if fuel was involved!?

I don't know if any of that helps anyone more knowledgeable about these things; there was a pop sound and then white smoke from around the bonnet (I thought it was steam at first) which then got thicker and from both sides.

noneil - you should have haggled - you let it go far too cheap!

Still nobody was hurt and its only a piece of metal.

 
I had an issue with the FPR which allowed fuel into the inlet tract (1/2" of petrol in the airbox!), that could easily be a similar problem.

The yellow flame is likely to be molten plastic/rubber.

Also, 1989 cars had a recall on a fuel pipe, damper to rail I think, which didn't catch all cars, and can spray fuel onto the exhaust......

Recall was on the fuel rail as well, mine is an 87 car and had the recall.
I have the recall number at home if anyone needs it as I believe this can still be carried out, mine was only done 3 years ago.

Tell me about it! That conversation has haunted me a little, but I am getting over it now. My heart really wasn't in it at the time though - I'll just have to put it down to experience . . .

I really hope this doesn't happen to anyone else, I'd advise anyone to check out those recalls, just in case!

Hi Andy,

You've got me a bit concerned now, mines a 1988 'S' and I can't find anywhere in the history that its been done, seeing as yours is an 87 S and the other one was an 89 I'm guessing mine might be in that recall

Sorry to hear about the car Noneil..

For other people who may be worried:

Did the same recall on my 87 turbo about a year ago. Just phone Porsche with Vin Number and they will tell you if there are any outstanding recalls on your car.

Was amazed that after 25 years they came to my house, collected the car, did the work, washed it and then brought it home.
