Glovebox supports

I've just ordered a few bits from Exeter; new heater clip and circlip, and grommets for the bonnet badge (thanks to Paul Ruddy for that). Great to get proper parts for under a fiver including postage!

Whilst on, I asked about the glovebox supports, the curved plastic "arms" that hold it open and stop it hitting your knees. They are built in to the glovebox front, and I declined to spend £128 on that![&:]

Didn't someone make a metal version, that would last forever and cost a whole lot less, or am I making that up?

They're regularly available on eBay - I think the metal ones come from USA, there was a recent thread on here about them.

I bought mine from the US around £14 for two arrived bare metal but a quick spray with black plasticote and been fine for nearly 5 years only used one as only one of the originals had snapped.

I had a broken one so I bought a second hand glove box lid off eBay that had both supports in place and took it apart to fix mine.

I have the other one spare if someone needs one? As you look at the glovebox it is the left hand side one that is spare []

I think that £22 is extremely reasonable for a durable replacement part that will outlast the car and has come from America! These (original) partsare the very opposite of durable and they were failing regularly in the early-mid nineties. Ive seen people replace them twice!

Im about to order a pair for my own sagging glovebox lid.

Yep, the whole part comes as one piece; 944 552 123 00 glove compartment cover. To be honest £128 doesn't seem that bad for the entire brand-new part, given that the arms alone are somewhere around £40 a pair (albeit metal, not plastic). Just a lot of money if you only need the arms!

Just a quick heads up.....

The glovebox lid and arms are all one moulded part. If an arm snaps off you can't buy a new arm from Porsche you have to buy a new lid with moulded arms complete.

The aftermarket metal arms require you to grind down the stub of the snapped arm and screw it into place.

I bought mine from Ken at Prestige Parts about ten years ago - excellent replacement from Ken and back then he was the only one to have the foresight to make them []

Exactly! If one stay breaks you have to replace the whole glove box lid and if one of those stays breaks youre back where you started.

Even now used glove box lids are expensive, so Id only consider buying one instead of the metals repair parts if my original was damaged in some other way too.

If one snaps you do not need to replace the whole lid if you buy the arms seperate you have to remove the glove box lid then the inside cover (felt covered part) I dont remember having to grind any old support off mine only screwing the new part to the lid and re-fitting the felt cover part, other than having to spray the metal support black the rest of the job only took about 1/2 an hour to complete and has lasted over four years in daily use. I only had one side snapped so have a spare right side for when and if that one snaps.
