getting used to it

After a couple of weeks of having my 1983 944 i have noticed a couple of quirks.

The temp guage lifts slowly when starting from cold and then seems to jump and jolt to its running temp where it will become stable, not sure if this is a sticking needle in the guage, or something more sinister.

I think i have a slight oil leak from the rear passenger side of the engine, only when given a bit of a run and then parked, oil appears on the garage floor the next day, not much but enough to notice.

Slight leak from the rear passenger side of the removable sunroof, (small puddle on the rrear seat when the car is washed.)

Got oil to change the gearbox oil but now i need to find a 17mm hex socket to remove the plugs and then a oil syringe to get the oil in. (doh)

I can't decide if i should get an aftermarket k & n type air filter or the standard one, or a full induction kit.

Probably going to get one of those dashboard top overlay kits to hide the cracking in the top of the dash, has anyone used one of these and what are they like?

Wish the aerial didnt go up when i have a cd on, considering putting a switch in the control cable for it so that i can manually operate it when i want the radio on.

I am sure there is much more that i havent noticed or have forgotten while compiling this list!

If anyone has any thoughts on anything i have mentioned or any suggestions i would be very gratefull to hear them.

Other than that i am really enjoying the car it seems to handle better than i am brave on public roads.

Cheers Tom

'Induction kit' will be a piece of over-priced bobbins whichll see no gain other than in induction noise; and probably cost performance.

Hi Tom

I've got an 83 944, I find that the gauges can be a little erratic! They do seem to be generally accurate though. Surprisingly the speedo is accurate to 1mph at any speed on mine, Satnav showed that up.

Ref the sunroof, maybe a new seal is all you need?

Ref the filter, I have a K&N and it sounds fine, I wouldn't go full induction personally, I've done it on cars before whilst you can get a nice, raspy note, at motorway speeds it can get a tad deafening on a long trip

Cheers
Andy

Good point, that happened on my Golf VR6. It was taking in hot air from the engine bay as no fresh air feed. I put the standard filter back in and the car was much more responsive!

First thing I did was take the K & N off the 2.7!
The Square dash gauges are very good, mine were very believable.
I'd clean the contacts on the temp sensor ( the rearmost one with a single contact on the top) may help settle it down.
Oil is probably from the filler assembly (large plastic cylinder) or dip stick tube seal.
I had a Sony radio that sometimes put the aerial up on Aux or CD and sometimes didn't - never (3years) figured that one out!

Further to Andy and Mikes posts: clean up your earths! Theyre a well known weak point on the cars and erratic or lazy gauges are a common symptom.

Halfrauds will sell an oil drain removal one to fit on the end of a socket set, should be around a tenner.

I used a length of garden hose and a funnel to fill the gearbox, just remember to remove the fill plug before the drain plug.

If you buy the oil in bottles with a short pipe on them (common) there is plenty of space to put the bottle at a suitable angle to fill.

As Albert says make sure the filler plug is out before taking the drain out.

I have an aftermarket induction kit on mine. I'm more than happy to do a straight swap for your standard air box. [;)]

In all seriousness I'm hoping I can replace the induction kit with the standard set-up soon. I'm not convinced about the merits of having the air filter sucking in the warm air from the engine bay. I will miss the rasp though [:)]

Re sunroof leak - is there a drain pipe at each corner of the sunroof opening as in a 968? If so, it's possible the pipe is plugged - remove the sunroof panel and check the drains! Common problem in 968's.

Exactly the same on a 44. Check by carefully pouring water down the tubes and seeing if it comes out under the car. If they are blocked then be careful not to push them off when poking around, they aren't easy to get back on! [&:]

Here is a picture of where the sunroof drain pipes go on a 968, it is the same on a 944
