Geo check results/issues

Thought I'd get a full geometry check done on my new one, as you can see below quite a lot was red!

Further inspection revealed that one of the bushes on the N/S lower wishbone is quite worn and it looks like it should have a metal sleeve which is missing? (when compared to the O/S one) The N/S inner hole looks oval;
Off-side;

Near-side; (hole is oval although hard to see here)

The chap in the garage could pull the push out quite a way without too much issue. He picked up on this as it looks like the ARB has been shifting sideways as you can see here at the bush mountings;

As a result I didn't get any adjustments made, seems pointless until I sort this out, so my questions are as follows;[:)]

1. Should I replace only the two wishbone bushes on each side - will this stop the movement of the ARB?
2. To replace them can I just undo the two bolts and replace - i.e. I don't have to worry about undoing/supporting anything else?
3. Are the wishbones and bushes EXACTLY the same as MK1 Golf? If they are then I have some in my garage[:D]
4. If they are not the same as MK1 Golf, where best to buy them from?

....and finally...

The garage are going to do some research as were not too sure but can the rear adjustments be made to the camber and toe which are out? Doesn't seem to be any obvious way of doing this

All help really appreciated

Cheers
Andy

That's quite an impressive service from f1 autocentre. How much did they charge for that, if you don't mind me asking.

Nothing! The check is free. I wont get any adjustments done until I have sorted out the issues. They charge per adjustment they make, on my S2 they charged me about £60 for 3 adjustments I think it was? If you do a google for the name of the geo' set up system they use, there is a web site which will show you your nearest centre that has this kit (it's not only F1) plus also a discount voucher [;)]

I'm surprised your car has been passing MOT's if there is as much movement in the bushes as you say. It looks like your ARB bush is knackered too - you can see how the end of the ARB has been polished as it has been sliding through the bush. I'd say you need your control arm bushes and ARB bushes replaced. Would make sense to do this anyway due to the age of your car assuming they are the originals.

Mot was passed in February. Only related advisory was wear on steering arm 'drumstick' as they listed it.

I've decided I'm going to replace both wishbones, ball joints and all bushes including those on the ARB.

anyone know about the adjustments needed to the rear toe and camber, as listed above?

I have a set of poly d shaped bushes that will fit, think they cost £30, you can have them for £15 if it helps you out. I ended up getting elephent racing ones. They are powerflex, brand new in the packet. email me on sandyfalconer@hotmail.co.uk if you want the bushes

Both camber and toe are fully adjustable on all 924/44/68 models by changing the position of the trailing arm relative to the torsion bar spring blade.

My rear trailing arm 86-on (procedure for pre-86 is the same)

Its a bit of a tricky one to visualise, so I've had a bash at sketching it. The key thing is to treat the inner trailing arm bush (mounting direct to the torsion bar tube) as the pivot point for the whole wheel assembly during adjustments.

---------------------------------------------------

To change the toe:
=> Trailing arm moves towards the front of the car relative to the spring blade = more toe in
=> Trailing arm moves towards the rear of the car relative to the spring blade = more toe out

To do this requires loosening of the trailing arm to spring plate mounting bolts. The fore and aft adjustment is then generated using Porsche tool 9171 ~ £10 from OPCs.

---------------------------------------------------

To adjust camber:
=> Trailing arm moves up relative to spring blade = more negative camber
=> Trailing arm moves down relative to spring blade = more positive camber

Again loosen the spring plate to torsion bar mounting bolts. This time the up/down movement is generated by an eccentric spigot on the anti roll bar to spring plate mounting stud.

I didn't find it the easiest thing to adjust to be honest.
Having proper slip plates and lasers should be a big help. I attempted mine with humble strings.

Thanks for the kind offer. I'll let you know, ideally I want to use oem ones as I'm always worried that powerflex and the likes of can be too firm

Jonny, thanks so much for suc a detailed reply, that's spot on[;)]

...and the underside of your car looks better than the outside of mine!! Nice one[8D]

That's what I like to hear! F1 autocentre in peterborough is very close to me anyway. I'll have to take the Rover once I get the bushes and things fixed. Thanks for the tip on the voucher!

I've been talking to Glenn at OPC Leicester today who's been very helpful. He's an ex VW man and confirmed that the square dash wishbones are same as MK1 Golf, the part number starts 171 which is MK1 Golf part number so that clears that up! Given these are £74 from OPC I'll use the golf ones I have!

All the bushes etc are pretty cheap and he just needs to verify which ARB bushes I need as some are 20mm and some 21.5mm apparently!

For info, I've ordered the Porsche tool 9171 mentioned above so I can get full geo adjust done, spoke to F1 again today and they said they'll happily do it all. The tool is only £7.51 + VAT!

Hope to have the bits by middle of next week and all done by the following weekend [:)]

I'm getting a full Geo done for free on a local Nissan garage's brand new £10k setup they've just had installed for the GTR but will need the rear adjustment tool. Could you post up the part number if you know it, for ease of ordering?

Thanks.

[:)] That photo was taken just over 12 months ago, the day I finished building it up from a bare shell.

Since then it's clocked up over 5k including 4 track days and 2 european tours - not so clean under there now (as it should be [;)]).

Properly sorting the Geometry had a huge effect on the feel of the car, well worth doing.
