Gen2 Cayman GT4 Turbo Charged ...?

Just throwing this one out there but with Porsche switching all main line cars to Turbo charged - so some time down the line it would be logical to presume they will build a Turbo charged GT car - who thinks it could be the Gen2 GT4 .... I have a sneaky suspicion they may use the GT4 as a way of testing the Market ... Please don't hose me for bringing this up but just wondered what people thought .... After all who would have said 10 years ago the venerable 911 would be Turbo charged ... ?

Nobody knows what next Gen GT4 or Spyder or GT models will be .

Personally I hope these models don't go turbo sure the new breed turbos are quick cars. Been debated on many forums it's not about how fast it is.

Yes we all like or want different models of the Porsche marque so it was nice when you could had an option of a turbo car or normally aspirated .

With the new breed going 4 pot turbo for Boxsters/Caymans even 6 pots are now turbo.

Not really given a choice any more every cars a turbo.

can you see Porsche in 4 years time offering an old NA engine on anything ?

I guess it depends when the next GT4 is due, But I see the last of the NA being the next GT3 and that's it.

Market forces favour the turbo these days. More bang for your cc's.

While waiting delivery of my new 718 CS PDK, my daily driver is an Abarth 595 Competizione 180 bhp. A frisky little thing. Having driven it for more than 16k miles on the flowing, twisty Highland roads, I'm well practiced in the turbo power delivery techniques. My driving roads are not all straight lines either so I know about keeping the turbo spooled up.

My impressions of the 718 CS will follow in due course. The 4 pot turbo sound track does not concern me unduly.

I think the Gen2 GT4 will be Turbo and they will keep GT3 N/a so to keep a distinct line between the two Marques and actually allowing the Cayman more Torque & BHP to keep up with GT3 speed wise but with the caveat that the GT3 will be Na for the enthusiast ... The 4L RS engine will be the last Na Porsche motorsport will build which will keep Na GT3 for at least another 6 years ... I think a GT4 RS will be built before the Gen2 GT4 anyway ... []

Alas the moneys not there to build a GT4 RS imo, you cannot throw a Carbon bonnet, plexi rear windows and the GTS engine at it because it would cost too much and be to close to GT3 prices.

GT3 was only 100k remember and I bet the next one will be only £105k, so no room for a GT4 RS !

NA for another 6 years, is a tough call regarding regs.

I think the next GT3 will be rather sort after if it has the 4.0 engine and the shorter ratio 6 speed manual, and at GT4 overs just about a straight swap into one.

Well, in the above article AP says they are likely to stick with flat 6 and Auto Express assume that to mean N/A - but he doesn't say that!(unless they left out part of the quote)

If GT4 stays NA it will be a six. If it goes turbo it will be a four. Or Porsche will have some explaining to do ! They say a six turbo won't fit, which is why 718's are fours ! So the turbo addenda fits in the 718 engine bay.

Porsche have already said the turbo 6 won't fit into the Cayman. So the 4 pot turbo is with us for the foreseeable, until hybrid power comes, then eventually full electric.

What will the naysayers say then I ask?

I say, "get over it!"

I have said right from the start that I think the next GT4 will be 4 pot turbo, as they will use the GT4 as a test to see how it goes down, like they did with the manual gear box.

plus with the new turbo engine making good power etc then a small hike in power to say 400 or even 430 in the flat 6 might not be enough to put it ahead of the lesser models and even more so if you start to remap the turbo.

with that as much as I love the GT4 buying one that is slower than say a GTS is not what I would want to be doing and you only need to look at the new 911 turbo range to see that the Gt3 is finding things hard staying NA even with its 4 L engine

times are changing fast and turbo's are the way forward for now and thats now it is

Porsche have done me a financial favour in many ways, as the move to 4-pot turbos in the Boxster/Cayman range means I'm now not constantly looking forward to what they do next. My last six cars have been various new Boxsters or Caymans, but I'm either going to hang on to my current Cayman GTS long term or maybe move on to another marque... Unless I become an important enough customer to be considered for purchasing the next GT4 - if it's a six pot! (Slim chance of that happening I suspect [])

Its an interesting debate my friends ... Sooner or later the Gt cars will move to Turbo's so just a question of when ..? You would think logically they will start with the Cayman - so therefore its not a bad punt to say the Gen2 Cayman GT4 will be 4 Pot Turbo with around 400Bhp and the torque to match leaving the 991 GT3 replacement in 2020 ish a Turbo 6 pot and the GT3 RS N/a .... What do you think ...??!!! Hang onto your GT4 i say ... Especially when 25 are for sale at OPC at the moment ... ;(
